Henna Hand

Went to the Global Fiesta at Queens Park on Sunday afternoon… had fun.. ate a chocolate covered icecream, courtesy of a friend 😀 , practised some signing (I now know the Auslan for “boring”! 😀 )

I also got a henna tatto on my hand! I’ve been wanting to do this for ages….

This is how it looked when I got home – the henna paste was still on, but some bits were falling off. The glitter was just an extra touch after the paste had been applied…it didn’t last long. You have to leave the paste on at least half an hour to 45 minutes (this had been on longer) , and you can’t smudge it. It’s surprisingly hard to keep your hand away from smudging dangers (especially while eating a dripping icecream….) I ended up spending the afternoon with my hand half raised, looking like I was about to start declaiming in a Roman debate…
After the time is up, the next step is to peel off the paste, then massage in an oil (mixed vegetable oil was all we had) It starts off quite pale, but darkens over the next 24 hours… this is what it looked like the next day..

Disregard the wrinkles…. and it’s quite hard to get a decent photo of your own hand…
I like it. It’s sort of like a “real” tattoo, but without the commitment… I still catch it out of the corner of my eye, and smile 😀

For My Boys :)

I found this on Pinterest, and it made me think of my boys…

… every time I look at my wiggly, wild boys,
I think, “I love you”! 😀

Living In The 70s

…no, not the Skyhooks song..

I was at the shops recently, when I wandered into a clothes shop.. there were clothes there that reminded me, both in form and fabric pattern, of what we wore (or wished we were old enough to wear) in the 70s. Then I realised that the music playing was “Funky Town”
I used to think the lyrics for that song were “Your toothpaste tastes too… Funky Town!”
Yeah, it doesn’t make sense. But, it was the 70s…

I was born in 1969, so the 70s were my formative years… it’s all a bit of an orangey/sepia type of haze now, like the colour photos from the time..
I’ve been looking at some old photos from the early/mid 70s – here’s one of me on my Space Hopper –

Remember those?
Here’s a clearer image..

I don’t remember mine having a face like that. That’s a bit creepy.

I wanted to note down all the things I remember from that era, but there are so many…
The clothes, of course. I wanted so much to have a flared pantsuit, and eventually a family friend gave me one of her old ones. It was nylon, in some sort of animal print. There are, thankfully, no photos in existence of me wearing it.

As far as I know.

I remember my first pair of jeans. They were bright orange, and I wore them with a lime green t-shirt. I was so hip in those days…

It always seemed to be bright sunshine, and I remember walking down to the (newly built) supermarkets down the road, on my own, on a Saturday, and getting a tiny bag of dolly mix, or a cone of hot, buttered, salted popcorn. Then I’d go home and read Trixie Belden, or watch one of the corny, but somehow exciting, TV shows of the period. There were too many to mention, but I did lean towards the “Little House On The Prairie/Waltons” type ones, or the sci-fi shows. There seemed to be so many of them, in a time when we still thought we might soon be living on the moon, or discovering our innate superpowers (Tomorrow People, anyone?) Tom Baker was “my” Doctor, and I started watching an exciting show called “Blakes 7”, which I still love.On the nights I wasn’t allowed to stay up to watch it, I could tune in to the ABC on my old mono (as opposed to stereo) radio, put in the earpiece, snuggle under the covers, and listen instead. The reception wasn’t the best, but it was better than nothing…

I had bits and pieces decorated with Holly Hobby, and Strawberry Shortcake. There was tie-dye, and paisley, and orange and brown furnishings… Tupperware in olive green, cream and orange..

ABBA, of course. We gave Nanna and Poppa the ABBA:Arrival double album for their wedding anniversary one year.
I’m not sure they were particularly thrilled.

Looking through Google hits reminds me that I also had a Growing Up Skipper Doll. Here she is..

She was meant to be Barbie’s little sister… but this version had a gimmick. Her upper torso was covered by a flexible rubber sleeve, so when you twisted her arm in one direction, her torso lengthened, and her breasts popped up. When you twisted it in the other direction, they went down again… It was endlessly fascinating, although the wire mechanism that pushed the rubber up eventually wore through. I’m not sure, either, if it prepared me for the realities of growing up..

I’m sure there are many other things I’ve forgotten.
The 70s were a… different… time. I remember them being more innocent, but I’m not sure if that was childhood, or the era..

It was a galaxy
far, far away…

Curious?

……………………..

Today, I came up with an idea for the boys… simple but, hopefully, ultimately useful.. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before 😀
Many years ago, when I first left for England, I had a tiny little diary. I didn’t actually use it as a diary (I had another book for that) so I started to note down all those little things that I found as I read, that I wanted to keep for later. Eighteen years later it’s nearly full, so I’ll be looking for another tiny book soon..
In there, I can find all sorts of recipes, for food as well as herbal remedies. I have various exercise programmes (most of which are still, sadly, unused..) I have information about the best places to visit when I am in London (or Cambridge, or Oxford..) as well as interesting websites and a poem/quote or two…

Today I thought I would get the boys to start their own book -something they can keep for years, and rediscover wonder whenever they want to. I told them to put in anything that makes them go “Wow!” We’re calling them “Curiosity Books”. We will intentionally seek out topics and places that we don’t usually look at…
School will only last for a time. Curiosity will be with them forever.

Theme Songs

Sometimes in your life, there are certain songs that sum up how you feel a large part of the time… for a long time, this was mine..

I was a melancholy child…

I still have “rock” days… sometimes things overwhelm me… but that’s not who I am anymore..

..and it’s not true, by the way.
Rocks feel a great deal of pain.
Islands cry buckets.
Just not where anyone can see them..

… but
One day, I finally realised that Jesus loved me..
and this became my theme song.

😀
I didn’t find that song until later, though..

This was the song I played over and over, 18 years ago..
(I couldn’t find a youtube clip – here’s a Grooveshark link..)

Whatever happens in my life, I am loved…
it still hurts, when there are people I want to care, and who just… don’t.
But I am never alone.
And my theme is joy!

(Not the official clip for this song, but I thought it was cute..)

Spring Is Coming..

.. just not in this hemisphere…
Around this time of year, when it starts to get colder, I think of England, and about going back for a visit. It’s not a possibility at the moment… doesn’t stop me looking for ideas for our next holiday 😀
Here’s a link to 10 Offbeat Things To Do & See In London. I shall add those to the list…

Where IS The Doctor?

I love books like “I Spy” and “Spot What”, where you have to find hidden images… some more obscure than others. I can spend ages poring over the larger scenes in the books, trying to find just the right image to fit the riddle/rhyme.
I also love Dr Who – I watched when I was younger (even if it was while hiding behind the sofa, at times), and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the latest incarnations (Doctors Nine to Eleven)

Look what I found yesterday at the library!!!!
Squeeeeeeeee!!

*ahem*

Find the Doctor!
Find Amy!
Find Rory!
Find the Tardis!

Look at this!

It’s an Adipose nursery ship!
…I think the Adipose babies were the cutest “adversaries” the Doctor ever encountered…

*frowns*
Those babies should not be watching Torchwood.

DON’T BLINK!!! 😀

Ooooooooood!!!

They say you should keep your brain active as you get older… I see these books as my way of doing that..

Yes.   *nods*
I’m exercising my brain!!

😀

KONY 2012

Since my post of a couple of days ago there’s been a lot of criticism of KONY 2012 zinging about online. Before I say anything else, here’s a short clip –

Now, I’m not an expert. I’ve not been to Uganda, I don’t personally know anyone from Invisible Children. I have heard about the issues there from other sources, including testimony from a rescued child (now a woman) of the horrors she endured. That was through Watoto, another worthy charity to take a look at….

I don’t think anyone is claiming that bringing Joseph Kony to justice is going to suddenly end all war, and cause Uganda to become a utopian place of rainbows and lollipops… I do think that the basic issue here is one of awareness. How many people had even heard of Kony before this? Evil flourishes in darkness…
I am not ashamed to stand by my decision to post this/sign the pledge… even if it’s just one little drop in a massive ocean. Rather a drop than nothing.

Still wondering about the various issues raised by critics? Here’s some answers... You can also find financial records on the site.
Here’s a tumblr post  that probably says things better than I could… 😀

… and here’s a clip to remind us that Kony is one part of a bigger problem –

Above all, search out what’s right, what’s true… research with open heart and mind. And then – Do Something. Even if it’s just a tiny drop in a very big ocean…
