Years Past To The Present

I was going through an old diary and found a (very!) old self portrait that I’d drawn over twenty years ago..

Back then, I’d not long left college, where I studied art. I did self portraits quite a lot (the model was always available, and worked for free πŸ˜€ ) I can’t remember exactly when I did this one.. it’s on mulberry paper, with charcoal and white chalk to highlight. I’ve been told it looks “dark” and “haunting”. I don’t remember that being something that I was trying to convey.. it could have shown through anyway…

I don’t do a lot of art these days.. at least, not visual art. In some ways, this blog is another form of self portrait – little glimpses of things that pop into my brain, or that I’m wrestling with, or that I just love to ponder. I don’t feel the need to create representations of my physical appearance anymore (although there’s an unfinished painting in a cupboard somewhere. Perhaps I’ll finish it someday.)

Back then, it was like my life was in a holding pattern – like there was something on the horizon, but “not yet”. Now, I’m living. I see who I am in the mirror every morning, and I like who I see. I may still do self portraits – there’s a lot more wrinkles and grey hairs now – that could be a challenge πŸ˜€ ..but my life now is fuller than a static image on a page.

And So, Hello To August!

What to do for the first post of the blogalong?…
There are a few possibilties.. but I thought I’d start with a bit of joy. πŸ˜€
I first came across these videos a few years ago, and they’ve always made me smile. They’re done by a bloke called Matt Harding, who was traveling with a friend. One day they decided to get the friend to film him doing his “funny dance”. There have been a few more since. πŸ˜€
Read more of his story here

This one’s not the first (They started in 2003, with the most well known one in 2006), but it’s the first with him predominantly dancing with other people, in various countries. I have a bit of a soft spot for this – there’s a section filmed in Brisbane – New Farm Park, by the look of it. I’ve “danced” there!

One of the things we’re trying to teach our beautiful boys is to look at their place in, and responsibilities to, this big world we live in – to see how much more there is outside of the little they’ve so far seen. I love the breadth of travel in these, and seeing people of such different backgrounds enjoying each others’ company. Doesn’t matter if we speak the same language or have the same beliefs or traditions. We can all still dance! πŸ™‚

Just as a little aside.. anyone remember “Sweet Lullaby”, by Deep Forest? It sampled a recording done in 1971, by a French ethnomusicologist traveling in the Solomon Islands. He recorded a young woman called Afunakwa, singing Rorogwela. Matt Harding used the Deep Forest version in his 2006 video, and later set out to find the origin of the sample. This shows what he found…

So – first blogalong day done and dusted! Yayy!

Just A House

A while back, not long after we moved here, I took a walk that went past our old house. It was quite a shock – one of my beautiful jacaranda trees had been chopped down, and there was a huge fence all around the perimeter of our previously open front yard. I didn’t walk that way again.

The other day, I was on another walk. The weather was worsening, so I decided to take the short cut home – which went past the old place. This time I made myself stop and look. It wasn’t too bad… the new owners are obviously able to make better use of the space than we could at the time we were there, and it looks loved. I looked a bit longer, and then realised that they’d kept the “Welcome” hanging I left on the door. And that made it better.

I belong here now..

tv lounge

it’s messy..

dinig room sunshine

..but comfortable.

bookshelf plus basket

I have my “stuff”

bookcase

I’ve made a place, with my lovely and loving family around me..

This is here – the past is past.
This is home.

If The Chemistry Is Right…

I did the first of my exams today – chemistry, a subject that I never would have thought I’d be studying..
It’s been somewhere between 25 and 30 years since I last sat an academic exam… I finished high school in 1985, and college was assignment based. I think I sat an exam for public service somewhere in the early 90s, but that was pretty much basic knowledge, so I’m not counting that.. πŸ™‚
Let’s just say that I was .. apprehensive. I couldn’t eat lunch, I felt a bit jittery – I’m not much good at the unknown. Three hours seemed a massive amount of time for one exam… I’d stayed up till 3ish this morning, reviewing, trying to cram all the formulas into my brain.. in the end, I didn’t need them at all, and the calculator sat, unused, on the desk..Β I think I did Ok, though. There were more questions about functional groups than I would like.. I enjoyed balancing equations..
Lots of prayer going on for me πŸ˜€ – Thanks, all who prayed!

I wore my “flying pig” socks, because then, anything is possible! πŸ˜€

I finished early, and had a few coins in my purse, so I went down to Boody’s Wall of LolliesΒ to get some sugar to celebrate..

A “cigar” (at least, they used to be called that..)
And a pig..

I’m taking the night off, possibly tomorrow as well. I have books to read..

What else is there to say?

1iute

…but hard work and study just might do it..

How To Succeed In The Arts…

..by Neil Gaiman, at a commencement speech at the University of the Arts last year.

The problems of failure; the problems of success..

… secret freelancer knowledge πŸ˜€

I got to this clip from this blog, which is about the “Imposter Syndrome” (also referenced in the speech) – the “unshakeable feeling that you are getting away with something, and that any moment now they will discover you.”
I would think that’s a quite common feeling in all sorts of professions, but possibly more prevalent in the arts..

It’s what you do with it that counts..
Letting that feeling rob you of the enjoyment of successes in your field would be sad..
Allowing it to prevent you from ever attempting to succeed would be worse..

Let There Be Cake!

I don’t usually do any study on Sundays (and I haven’t really today..) but I saw this “cell” cake on a failblog site yesterday…

cell cake

How cool is that? πŸ˜€
There’s the nucleus in the middle, containing the nucleolus, and the chromatin, before it coils and condenses into chromosomes…. the organelles are “floating” around in the cytosol, including both rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, the golgi complex, and I think I can see ribosomes and lysosomes…

Perhaps I should complete all my anatomy/physiology assignments (from now on) by providing explanatory cake?

Sweet! πŸ˜€

Family Day

Anzac Day – not a celebration of war, but a remembrance.. when we remember and honour those who went to war, and never returned.. We also honour those who came back, broken and torn, those who could no longer navigate the world with peace of mind.. those who saw friends fall, and felt the guilt of still being alive. We honour the families who waited, and who sometimes waited in vain… and we remember and honour those who are in war zones right now, or who are training in readiness.

We didn’t get to the march today, and I feel a little guilty about that, but today we pulled the curtains, stayed in our pyjamas, made popcorn, and spent the morning snuggled on the sofa watching DVDs.. Today we just wanted to spend together as a family, enjoying time together, remembering the good that can still be found in this world.

We watched Prince Caspian, from C.S.Lewis’ Narnia series.. here’s a montage, with the final song from the movie..

Why do we love to watch such fantasies – why do they tug at our hearts? Perhaps they tap into a place deep within us – a place where we have been given a memory, or a glimpse of eternity – that there’s something more..

I believe in a Saviour, who made a way for us to get back to God – to the place we were always meant to be.. I believe that when we watch movies, or read books, where good overcomes evil and all is right in the end, that those stories sound an echo in our hearts, that all will be well, and there is a way home.Even in the greatest darkness, there is still the capacity for light..

Adrian – Ups And Downs

I’m procrastinating again, trying to find something interesting to while away the hours.. I googled Adrian Plass, who is a writer who makes me laugh… and sometimes cry. There were various YouTube clips, so I thought I’d share them..

This one is basically a reading from one of the books..

Have a giggle πŸ˜€

This is pretty much an ad for a DVD, but it shows the “flavour” of the books..

Adrian is a writer of Christian humour, funny in its own right, but also a vehicle to get more serious points across..
He writes as someone who has suffered a breakdown, and depression, and as someone who stumbles and falls…
Anyone who has experienced depression will recognise this ..

Over all, he knows that “God is nice – and He likes you!” πŸ˜€

Unexpected Love

100_6281

I know You love me
All the time
Your heart has told me
Through Your words.
I hold them close
To comfort me
But sometimes, still,
You catch my eye –
The curtain lifts –
Eternity.

In random places,
Signs, and times,
When disappointments
Crush me down..
You send me hearts –
A glimpse, but clear,
In everyday,
In every need.

Coincidence, some say –
And yet
I know You’ve
Put Your heart in mine.
