Life And Cupcakes

Yesterday I went for a walk.
Sounds such a simple statement… but it’s been a while since I was able to do that. Yesterday was such a beautiful day, wasn’t it? Blue skies.. not too hot. I was a bit wobbly when I got where I was going, but nothing a coffee and a cupcake couldn’t help.. 😉

This was one half of my view – the sign says “Live life with love, passion, kindness and cupcakes.” Sounds good to me…

Here’s the other half of my view.. beautiful skies!

…and here’s the food.. a mini lemon meringue cupcake, a cappuccino  – and look at the gorgeous mini bikkie on the spoon!

Sat for a bit, then went home, admiring the dandelions on the way… they grow wherever they are – even if they’re considered weeds, they still brighten my day. 😀

Look…

… what came in the mail the other day!!

daylight medal

It’s my medal for the virtual fun run/walk!
Here’s another view..

Daylight medal 2

It’s a bit hard to see, but there’s a TARDIS in the middle with K-9 waiting  faithfully outside..
The horizontal bit is a sonic screwdriver..
Sorry – I can’t read the Circle Gallifreyan.. if you can, let me know what it says?
Around the outside, it says, “Basically, run…. virtual run/walk” and “1963 (Gallifreyan) 2013”
It’s gorgeous – bigger than I’d thought..

Now I just have to finish my virtual marathon 😀

Random Kisses..

…made my day. 😀

You know when little kids are just at that age where they’re walking, but not yet confident? They either toddle each step, with a look of concentration on their face, as though one lapse will cause disaster… or they hurtle forward with arms held up, relying on momentum to keep them going. I love watching littlies navigate their way in the big world..
Today, I was sitting in the mall with friends, as I am wont to do on a Tuesday, when a Mum and her tiny boy wandered past. He was doing the “veering between two unspecified points” concentration thing, and came within our sphere… so we said hello. He waved, and babbled happily, then Mum decided that they needed to be moving on, and said to him to say goodbye… he looked at me uncertainly for a second, then began blowing kisses, before toddling off to new adventures.

And that’s one of the reasons I like sitting in the mall on Tuesdays. You never quite know what you’re gonna get (although I haven’t yet got a box of chocolates..)
Lots of great people. Serendipity.
…and sometimes even random kisses.. 😀

This Day

Life is Good

It’s been one of those days… up.. down.. in between.
Sometimes a day that seems to have been going well gets a bombshell chucked into the middle of it – big, small.. doesn’t matter – and you have to decide what to do with it.

I can always look around, and remember just how blessed I am. There are niggles and prickles and pitfalls, but that doesn’t mean I have to focus on them.
I choose to look towards the big, beautiful, full of promise life that is mine.
And it is good. 😀

life is nothing without love

Half A Virtual Marathon

I’ve not been well for a while, but today I got the chance to start on a course of herbs/vitamins/minerals… should clear things up and start me on the road to wellness 😀

Just as well, too.
I recently signed up to do a virtual half marathon. What’s that, you ask?

Well, it’s in honour of the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, and you get a cool running bib, and a Whovian medal at the end…

The money raised (entry fee) goes to help the Boston Marathon Victims Relief.
There are three categories –

1 mile kid’s race (US$10 entry fee)
5 mile race ($20)
Half marathon ($20)

The half marathon is just over 13 miles (or just over 21 kilometres) Thankfully, I don’t have to do it all at once – I can walk, and do it in stages – being virtual, I just check in with an update when I walk. I’ve figured out that our house is roughly 3.7 km from town, so that’s about six trips, or three times there and back. Now I’m going to be feeling better, should be a piece of cake. 😉

If you want to join in, you can sign up online –

…and don’t forget the actual 50th anniversary  special –
23 November 2013

GERONIMO!!! 😀

Leaving Toowong

I heard this song a couple of days ago.. a lovely, sad memorial song…
Here’s what the artist had to say about it –

“My Dad died at the beginning of 2011 which coincided with the biggest floods Brisbane has seen. This was something that loomed pretty large for me over the whole writing period of ‘Departures’ and I suppose a song like this was bound to come out. The lyric is talking about the place in Brisbane where I grew up. Toowong, a near city suburb that my Dad also spent his childhood in and ended up being buried in, along with my older brother, who I now happen to be older than. ” Bernard Fanning. Taken from the forthcoming new album ‘Departures’

Beautiful song… I loved the old childhood movie stuff as well. Have you ever watched someone else’s home movies, or looked through random old photos? I used to trawl through the junk shops, looking for treasures.. among then were often abandoned photos, of people that I’d never met.. I find them fascinating.
Aren’t we all so similar? It doesn’t matter what clothes we wear, what year we’re in, what we know, or say, or believe… we’re all the same, in so many ways. Living life.. squabbling with the siblings.. eating a picnic, or running along the beach. Smiling for the camera. Being human. We all live..love..laugh..or mourn.

Same..

(The video above doesn’t seem to exist anymore… I’ll leave it up in case it comes back (it illustrates the post). In the meantime, here’s the audio)

Things I Learned Today..

… that a glass jar, when dropped from roughly chest height, explodes quite spectacularly. And the miniscule shards scatter over an unbelievably large area. No cuts, though.

… that Apple products can be quite infuriating. Did you know that there is no way to update an Apple id for apps? If you have to change ids, you also have to delete any apps downloaded through another id (if you want to update them, anyway..)
On the plus side, I now have the capacity to upload a stack of other apps. Do you realise how many free Bibles, herbal medicine pharmacopoeias, and anatomy textbooks there are? It’s like Christmas in… well.. August! 😉

Some days just need a big mug of hot chocolate and a good mystery to read while snuggled up in bed. Unfortunately, I still need to complete an essay (on herbs that can be useful to help overcome chemical addictions) It’s going OK. I’ve opened some books…

In the meantime, here’s..

happy bee

… a happy bee.

cheerful pig

A cheerful pig.

cute duck

A cute duck..

sunshine angel

… and a sunlit angel.

Hope your day has been beautiful 🙂

Privilege?

Watched “Made in Dagenham last night.. it’s about the Ford machinists strike in 1968, which led to legislation being passed in the U.K. for equal pay for women. Good movie – go and watch it. 🙂

This clip made me think. It’s not something that I’ve really verbalised, but it’s something that I’ve come across too many times – men who seem to think that the fact they don’t booze, whore and beat their wives and kids means that those wives/kids should be eternally grateful – and show that gratitude somehow. Sometimes it’s a subtle, possibly not even recognised way of thinking. Sometimes it’s almost a threat – keep in line, woman, or I’ll start doing all those things (and it’ll be YOUR fault)
I have a hubby who is a good man. He does none of those things, and would never think of doing so. Yes – I am thankful. But that is not based on his “sainthood”, or that he’s somehow restraining himself from some sort of more “normal” male response. That’s because I know, and have seen, what some of the alternatives can be.
It’s like the clip above says. Having a partner who treats you like an equal human being, with respect and love, is a right. Not a privilege.

And that’s as it should be.

Strange Beans

Snuck up on my littlest bean today.. this is what he looked like..

dome hat

Why? I’m not really sure..

We homeschool our two boys, which is wonderful, or frustrating, or all points in between…
They are both such individuals – something we want to nurture in them. Of course, there are some things that they need to learn – being able to use numbers, and the English language; knowing at least some of how the world works; knowing what happened in this world before us… these are important things to know…
… but if that should involve marching around the house, speaking in an interesting accent, or pretending to be the Cyber Controller (possibly the inspiration for the dome hat) – then – why not? It’s rarely dull in our house.
