Navigating Empty Roads

We had some unavoidable appointments today, so even though we’re in voluntary isolation at the moment, there’s still some things you can’t do by phone or internet.
After the appointments were done, we thought we’d get a coffee at our favourite cafe.

IMG_2077

As per quarantine rules, they’re only open for takeaway at the moment. There are no tables inside, so we’re not tempted to stay, and you can see the tape on the floor to help with distancing while waiting. The other room is blocked off.

IMG_2078

You can phone through an order and pick it up quickly – I believe they will also bring your order to your car (if you park on the street outside) if you really don’t want to risk being around people… No cash is accepted at the moment – pay by tap.
We had a (properly distanced) chat while waiting for our coffee, talking about the situation and the changes it’s brought. I personally have had mostly good interactions with people up to now, but I know there’s been bad stuff happening – abuse of supermarket staff, hoarding and general awfulness. Talked about the difficulties of getting the fresh ingredients to make what they sell…
I wouldn’t want to be in customer service at the moment. I’ve done that in the past, and I know that even at the best of times some people can be rude, entitled and sometimes abusive. With the fear levels now, the filters are off some people’s reactions. Those on the counters in healthcare or retail situations are making the best of the circumstances, while never quite knowing if the person in front of them is passing on a virus that could seriously impact themselves or someone they love. Whole days, weeks of that is exhausting.

Choose kindness.

Slow down.

Breathe.

We drove home afterwards, in a city that felt like it was early morning – minimal traffic and pedestrians. I’ve felt lately like time has been slowing down, in a way – it’s hard to remember what day it is sometimes.
Our libraries are closed now, but over the last week or so they increased the borrowing limit from 20 items to 50. I decided that was a goal I could aim for! I now have my 50 items, for an indefinite period. I just have to find the time to read them!

I was glad to get home this morning, and finally have breakfast.

IMG_2081

We went to the cafe because we were in the area, and because we wanted to support them. It won’t be a regular thing, though, and I wanted to make it worth the trip 😀
A bigger breakfast, and definitely more sugar, than I’m used to.
No regrets.

Apart from necessities, we’ll be at home now. Probably reading…

I hope your day holds something good, whatever your situation.
Here are some cafe bunnies to cheer you!

Waiting For The Day

…or – “The Flower Lady Strikes Again!” 😀
There’s a lady at church who hands out flowers every week – birthdays, anniversaries or when someone just needs cheering up. Some are planned (she must have a list of special days somewhere) and some are given to people she feels God is leading her to. It’s an amazing and important ministry!
Tomorrow is my birthday (yay!) so it was my turn this week. Sweet tiny roses, in beautiful pinks and oranges – just what I wanted ❤

IMG_1718

Aren’t they lovely?

My Babe is out all day tomorrow, so he took me out for breakfast this morning at our favourite place.

IMG_1735

IMG_1733

Looking around the place this morning, it felt almost like I imagine a run down, but formerly genteel, stately house in a jungle would look like…

IMG_1725

…with added fairy lights.

IMG_1734 (2)

Also hearts…and dragonflies!

IMG_1731 (2)

IMG_1726

It’s nearly midnight now.
I’ll finish with a song we sang last night – went with a friend to a church service, where we were replenished and inspired.
I think I may take this as my birthday song! 🙂

Walking To The Cafe

Decided to jump on into another exercise session today. We’d thought we were going to go regularly, but this is only the second time… It was crisp and cold, with blue, blue skies, and the promise of coffee and cheesecake for afters (I skipped breakfast).
Just down the road from us is a free council exercise program, with walking between stations. It seems a waste to have such a resource so close to us and not use it, especially as it’s not too hot now. There are various pieces of equipment for all levels.

IMG_0370

The last photo is a station close to the car park, and is primarily for the elderly (equipment to improve grip and flexibility) and for wheelchair users. There are benches at each station in case you overdo it, and it’s a gentle walk around the circuit. Have a look at your local council Parks and Reserves page – I searched under “recreation”, then “strength and agility stations”

Finished the morning with mocha and cheesecake.

IMG_0379

You can tell by my coffee that were sitting at a bit of a wonky table – the cafe was so full that we had to sit outside, and the footpath isn’t quite level… here’s the view.

IMG_0372

Obviously the place to be!

Continuing the health vibe with kale chips and chamomile tea… time to sit in the sunshine and read 🙂

Staring Down The Century

Today is the central day of my personal century… I can look back with kind assessment on the previous half, before squaring my shoulders and facing forward to the unknown years.
I also realised today that I have just entered my sixth decade. That feels both scary and oddly liberating!
It’s been quite a while since I cared much about how others see me. As I get older I’m more able to be “me”, without pretence. There’s scope for fun and frolic – singing randomly in the supermarket, dancing down the street – as well as the serious adult business of life. I’m unsure what I’ll be doing this year, but the possibilities are endless!
It’s a little odd to realise I’m now eligible for all sorts of “over 50s” opportunities, and I’ll have to remember to pick the next age group on the drop down menus on surveys…

Celebrated this morning with my Babe, having breakfast at our favourite cafe.

IMG_3626

I asked my Babe to take a photo of me… didn’t like the first one, so asked him to take another.

IMG_3634

I look like I’m about to cry!
This called for a selfie…

IMG_3635

I ended up looking slightly terrified of… something. (Look at my lovely necklace, though – it’s a sonic screwdriver, a gift from Sweet Bean 🙂 )
I ended up taking a selfie while laughing at the previous attempts. This shall be my official birthday portrait!

IMG_3636_1

Here’s breakfast – bacon, avocado, haloumi, poached egg, sweet potato rosti and greens. Yum!

IMG_3637

IMG_3639

On the way out, beautiful fragrant flowers. It had been raining earlier.

IMG_3640

Spent the rest of the morning reading my Bible and listening to worship songs.

I plan to continue celebrations tomorrow by taking a trip in to the big city. We’ll see how it goes!

Looking Up

I think I may have figured out the reason (or at least one of them!) that I like my favourite cafe so much.
There’s always something to look at – lots of knick-knacks, new decorative touches, books in odd places. This includes higher up on the walls, where you may not think to look at first.

img_3556

I felt a bit down when I went in, but started to feel better after a while. Normally I would attribute that to the coffee and muffin (which I’m sure helps), but I noticed that I was spending a large proportion of my time gazing…up.
At the bottles in the window. At the plaster. At the lightbulbs. And the very act of looking upwards was also making me feel more “up”! I’m not sure what the other patrons thought of me staring up at the light through green bottles and grinning like a loon, but it made my day!

Here’s another of my views – a bee, I believe…

img_3558

…and some words to journey by.

Frangipanis And Chocolate Chips

This week has been a big week. We had everything organised to be ready for Christmas, but… circumstances change. Rather than doing a big shop Monday and bits and pieces as needed after, I’ve been getting lifts with (lovely, kind) friends or taking the bus.
The nice part about shopping on my own is being able to sit and savour a coffee. Went to my favourite place and got a comfortable seat.

IMG_3489

IMG_3488

Enjoyed a coffee and a brownie.

IMG_3490

Reflected on life… 😀

IMG_3492

Contemplated a dragonfly, and found that my coffee loves me…

IMG_3494

IMG_3495_1

My story for the day…

IMG_3496_1

On another shopping trip I had a bit more walking to do, but found a frangipani tree on the way – time for a bit of decoration!

IMG_3500

Today was busy with finishing cooking/baking/cleaning for the family do tomorrow. I’m a bit tired now but IT’S DONE! Mostly. Some last minute bits to do tomorrow. Right now I’m taking the night off, watching “Elf”, and getting excited for tomorrow!

Merry Christmas Eve Eve! 😀

Sunshine, Rain And Clouds Again…

It’s Sweet Bean’s birthday on Monday, so he had a celebration today with his friends – watching a DVD while eating pizzas and various sweets. All we had to do was provide food and leave them to it! This morning we took him to spend some of his birthday money – great excitement beforehand, and happiness after 😀
It’s been wet quite a lot lately – if not actually raining, then overcast and threatening. It’s been a while since there was any sort of prolonged rain, so it’s good to see.

Apart from the actual weather we’ve had sun interspersed with clouds – good news, some setbacks, some opportunities and possibilities… just the time to have a coffee and talk things over!

IMG_3016

This is where we sat, with lots of greenery, and lowering skies. Apparently there were also bees…

IMG_3018

The view. With mocha cheesecake.

IMG_3019

…and mocha.

IMG_3024

Old buckets and boxes in a transient glow. The small tables are new (at least since I was last here). They’re made from the bases of old treadle sewing machines.

The weather has almost matched my mood this week – sudden descent into flat grey for some of it. Not too drastic, and I know I just have to get through for a few days until the sun shines again. This week I allowed myself to just stop – at least for a time. To not do everything I felt I should be doing – just for one day – just to decide not to feel guilty. I know I am incredibly privileged to be able to do that. It did make a difference for me.
We still have Sweet Bean’s actual birthday to celebrate. This is most likely to involve ice cream. And another year beginning, with the sun shining through future clouds.

Mocha For A Dreaming Day

Another coffee post! 😀
I’ve been out for coffee a couple of days this week. This afternoon was at Market Organics with my Babe, where we shared cheezecake, talked about our lives at this point and the possible future.

IMG_2914

IMG_2916

Chocolate/mint not-quite-cheesecake (not sure what it was made of)

Wednesday I had to have a mammogram (just a check up) so decided to go down to Rafter & Rose afterwards. I figured that after being squished and (wo)manhandled, a mocha and gluten free muffin was not too much to ask for!

IMG_2903

The reminder over my table 😀

IMG_2904

…and a bunny to watch over me.

IMG_2901

My little nook (and muffin – the mocha came later) It was quiet and I was able to drift into dreaming for a while, and have a bit of prayer time. Sometimes the world overwhelms, and it takes an effort to remember to enjoy the quiet places…

I’ve also been discovering new songs this week. Here’s a new favourite.

Looking forward to the weekend…
All I have left to say is –

Rise And Shine

Not long back from breakfast out. Some lovely friends gave me some money for my birthday back in February to go out for breakfast, but this is the first morning we’ve been able to get there…

IMG_2510

Mocha for me and Earl Grey for hubs 🙂

IMG_2512

House breakfast for two – sourdough toast with bacon jam, avocado, baby spinach and poached eggs. Yum!
Where is this, I hear you say? Go down to Rafter and Rose – they’re open most days from 6.30am. It’s peaceful, even with other people about (and there may not be that many!) This morning the early sun streamed in…

IMG_2514

Noticed this pot on the next table.

IMG_2520

Grow things! 😀
Thought about sitting at this table next time I come in on my own – seems cosy.

IMG_2521

Good morning to you!

Another Year, Another Coffee

It’s my birthday today! Yayyy! I am 7 in dog years today 😀
Went to Rafter and Rose for breakfast this morning with Hubby – we were pretty much the first ones there, so had our pick of the tables.

IMG_2199

The board outside…

IMG_2179

The other side of the board – not my sentiments this morning. I love everybody today!

IMG_2183

IMG_2184

Sat in the corner, with a good view of the empty early morning streets.

IMG_2187

IMG_2188

The cake/muffin selection above was amazing – we got some to take home, but opted for a breakfast. This was one portion, but we shared.

IMG_2194

My mocha…

IMG_2193

The design was either a swan or the Sorting Hat.Tasted gorgeous.
We ate and chatted, and I revelled in being able to go out and enjoy a meal without incident. The music was a selection of 80s music, which made me feel young… Started eating with the Eurythmics and finished with this –

Yes, I did sing along…

Here’s some more random interiors from the cafe.

IMG_2182

IMG_2116

And one exterior…

IMG_2198

Birthday portrait!

IMG_2192

Got home, and my beautiful boys gave me my pressies, and the cards they had made ❤

IMG_2200

They know me… 😀

IMG_2201

Hello, Four!

It’s only just past 9am, and I’ve had a fabulous day so far! ❤
Bring on the year!
