Outside My Door

Went for a walk yesterday. It’s been ages!
I didn’t go far, but reveled in the fresh air. Took some photos of blue skies and trees that aren’t the ones I can see from my back patio…

On the way back home I stopped for a chat with the neighbour – we’ve got some good sized grassy areas for kids to run around in (with shoes on, because of the prickles), so we could chat while keeping our distance. They were looking at a tree with hundreds of butterflies, so I took a video, for when I need some relaxing beauty…

Walking Under Lowering Skies

…and still my heart felt light!

Another birthday today – it’s becoming a tradition for me to take a trip to the city, and round to New Farm, to revisit my younger days. The skies looked like this.

Rain threatened all day, but didn’t actually fall. The wind was strong (my hair still hasn’t recovered) and it was a bit chilly, especially since it’s been sweltering lately.

I loved it.

I went in on the train with my Babe this morning;  he got off at Roma Street for his first day of classes, I stayed on till the Valley. Took a bus from there to New Farm, where I wandered for a bit before having some coffee and cake (Baci Torte) at the New Farm Deli.

Apparently I’m reserved.
Who knew?

They had a fire last year, so there’s been a lot of rebuilding. It’s all done and open for business, whether you want the cafe experience, or fine foods to take home. Fancy some cheese?

From there I went to a green space in Brisbane that a couple of people have told me about – it’s free to visit and to sit and have your lunch, and there’s great views as well. I had a bit of trouble with the escalator going up – it’s a two floor journey, and the angle felt too steep and unending… there’s also a lift to get there. I didn’t have as much trouble coming down…

As it was so close I went to have a wander round. I couldn’t get photos that showed the windows, but I love the vaulted ceilings and arched stonework.

I pottered about after that until it was time to meet my Babe at Roma Street to take the train home again.
We stopped to get dinner and cake on the way home.

It’s been a quiet night since then 🙂

The two at the top are glass Christmas ornaments, and the little pink angel is fair trade, hand carved stone from the cathedral shop. The other is a hanging ornament called “Song of Joy” (the bit to the right is where she’s kicking her leg up as she dances).
Here she is hanging up next to my chair.

Nearing The End

…of the school year, anyway!

The exams are over, the days are getting hotter, and the long holidays are close. Sweet Bean is checking out some of next year’s studies, but there’s still time for a bit of basic baking.

Obviously, a cup of tea rounds off the lesson.
Last week we did basic biscuits, this week was basic cake. We’ve used a recipe to some extent, but I’m trying to show him how to bake when you don’t have a recipe – ingredient proportions, how a batter or dough looks and feels when you make it. Fun! Especially when we put a CD on and dance while it’s cooking 🙂

One more week to go before holidays.

My Onion Heart

I’ve had this photo hanging round for a few days, waiting for me to use it. My plan was to write a poem to go with it – and I have most of one. I’m struggling with a line that just won’t go right…
PROCRASTINATION!
(which means that nothing gets done if not perfectly…)

Here is my onion heart. Without poem.
I’ve written before about the hearts God leaves for me – clouds, leaves, various places. This was one that was left on the floor after a trip to the markets – a random onion skin proclaiming love.
I wanted to share it in a perfect setting, but that often means it just doesn’t get done.
Here is love, in imperfection, amongst the cares and responsibilities of the day!

Chill…

Nearly end of term! It’s been disjointed and almost as though it would never end well, but we’re nearly on holidays again (yay!). Sweet Bean had his work looked at today – he’s doing well… lots better than he thought he was!
We’ve had ructions these last few weeks… who thought it would be a good idea to combine an early teen boy and a not-far-off-50 Mum in the same household? Fireworks have been let off at fairly regular intervals lately, followed by a feeling of exhaustion. Consequently, I’ve just done the bare minimum of study this afternoon, and have been enjoying chilling out tonight. I’ll be catching up on “Angel” and then reading a bit this evening… 🙂

We’ve needed a lot of grace, and love, around here lately.

Wrapping Up The Week

Ever have one of those weeks that veer between “I feel the world is out of control and can I just punch something/one?” and “All is right with the world – I shall now randomly sing”? I’ve sort of had a week like that…
First – here’s a heart I found in the car park at the markets I went to yesterday.

It’s the first time I’ve made it to the Rocklea Markets for months now. We brought back pastries for breakfast – we had to get back in time to get to a book sale…

Rhubarb crumble brioche, and sour cherry and coconut. Yum!

This week I’ve been trying to finish an assessment – everything I searched for, every book I read, I just couldn’t find the answers I was looking for. I think I’ve finally figured it out, but I felt hopeless for most of the week…
Also this week – Hubby went for a job – his first interview for around five years. It didn’t go well, but because of a good phone interview the week before, he’ll be in the second intake of trainees. It’s commission only, but the best offer we’ve had for years…
The world goes on, and in our little corner it may all change soon!
We went out for coffee to celebrate 🙂
