Rhapsody In Time

Look what I was doing this arvo! πŸ˜€

We haven’t really used the TV, or the DVD player, for a while. The TV has served as a handy support for a small quilted artwork, but otherwise has just…sat there.
My beautiful boys have heard me saying that I wanted to watch the more recent Doctor Who episodes (they’ve been on the Disney channel, which we don’t have), so they clubbed together to get me the 60th anniversary specials for my birthday.
In Blu-ray.
I (didn’t) have a blu-ray player, so they tried to find a DVD set for me. Nope. Nothing available.

What to do?
Obviously – buy me a blu-ray player.
Which they did! ❀

My Babe set it up today, and I decided to watch just one episode.
…three episodes later πŸ˜† I had caught up a bit with The Doctor(/Donna), and will be keeping an eye out for the most recent series.
I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon!
πŸ˜€

(also – because it just came out today πŸ™‚ )

Time Out

Don’t mind me.
I’m just trying to distract myself from the need to finish an essay for the nearly due assessment.

Look!
11, K9, 10, and a floral TARDIS!
πŸ˜€
(got them off Facebook yesterday…)

Yes, I’ll stop procrastinating. Soon.
A lot of the questions I’ve been answering for my assessment are about my opinions on things. They’re taking longer than I thought they would… I’ve had to do a fair bit of reading, even if I know a bit about a topic. After all, how can I give an opinion on something if I’m not clear on what the something is?
Also – there are a lot of interesting side quests along the path of research!

So – I need to take time out, and clear my head a bit.
Tonight it’s a blog post.
Yesterday it was coffee (or hot chocolate) out.

I feel rested just looking at it πŸ™‚

Well, back to the essay.
Or a bit more scrolling.
Whatever.

Goodbye, Wilf!

…and, of course, many other characters over a nearly 80 year career.
Bernard Cribbins died yesterday. I mostly know him for playing Wilfred Mott in Doctor Who, but there were many roles over a long period of time. If you haven’t seen him in a role, then you’ve probably heard him!

Goodnight, Mr Cribbins. And thank you.

To The Wild Sky

It’s a new day, new year, and the dawn of the new ’20s.
Will we be dancing the “new” Charleston whilst quaffing champagne? I don’t think I’ll go with the champagne, but dancing seems the thing to do…

We saw in the new year by drinking Grapetise with the boys, and pulling Christmas crackers that I’d bought cheap from the post Christmas sales. We toasted to new experiences, then went to bed. Such excitement!
I don’t do New Year Resolutions, but it’s still a good time to think about what this year can bring. To say goodbye to the dying year, and look ahead to the dawning light.
My Aunt sent me a card, which references Tennyson’s “Ring Out, Wild Bells” – here’s the full text.

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light:
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.
Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.
Ring out the grief that saps the mind
For those that here we see no more;
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in redress to all mankind.
Ring out a slowly dying cause,
And ancient forms of party strife;
Ring in the nobler modes of life,
With sweeter manners, purer laws.
Ring out the want, the care, the sin,
The faithless coldness of the times;
Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes
But ring the fuller minstrel in.
Ring out false pride in place and blood,
The civic slander and the spite;
Ring in the love of truth and right,
Ring in the common love of good.
Ring out old shapes of foul disease;
Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;
Ring out the thousand wars of old,
Ring in the thousand years of peace.
Ring in the valiant man and free,
The larger heart, the kindlier hand;
Ring out the darkness of the land,
Ring in the Christ that is to be.

Β

Seems like a call to wipe out the old year entirely… I’m sure some of us feel like doing that!

Yesterday I binged on some of my favourite episodes of Doctor Who. Looking back, it seems like they all talked about feeling lost in this world, unnoticed and unappreciated by others, and feeling like you have nothing to give. Happily, each ended with the respective characters finding their worth in one way or another. This is one of my favourite scenes!

If there is anything I want for this year, it’s that we all find where we’re meant to be – our place in the world, our worth, and the people who love and need us.
Let us arise and soar into the wild sky!

A quote from Vincent
β€œBe clearly aware of the stars and infinity on high. Then life seems almost enchanted after all.”

…and a song to hope with.

Good Things Come In Variable Sized Packages

…not just small packages!

A recent windfall meant that we are now the proud owner of a brand new, pillow top, properly sprung mattress! Yay!!
This may not sound earth shattering, but when your sleep is punctured (or withheld) by deep hollows in the bed that cause the spine to sag, or rogue springs making ominous noises when rolling over, a new mattress is a cause for celebration.
Here it is!

Our shopping foray also uncovered a bargain in a pawn shop – series 2 of Doctor Who (new version) for just under a fiver… I’ve been resisting getting these box sets because of cost – there’s aΒ lot of them to catch up on, and I have seen them before. Seemed too good a deal to miss…

IMG_3791

Is this a sign that I need to lounge in bed and watch a bit of sci-fi goodness?
Seems like it to me! πŸ˜€

A Good Story

Look what I found yesterday, hidden amongst other harmony hearts (they chime…) in a basket! It’s even tardis blueΒ (or close enough)! And yes – that is a real colour.

Rising Up

Just been watching the third episode of the new series of Doctor Who, where they interact with Rosa Parks, and ultimately ensure that history is made in spite of alien shenanigans…
I was intitially a little skeptical that it would turn out well – there are so many ways it could have been handled badly. Thoroughly enjoyed it πŸ™‚

My post title comes from the end credits, and a song that fits well with Rosa’s story. It wasn’t written for the show – it’s a few years old, and has become an unofficial anthem for the Black Lives Matter movement.

I’ve really been enjoying this new series. It’s different in a lot of ways (and also the same in many). I can’t quite put my finger on justΒ how it’s different… obviously different writer, and that shows. The companions seem to be more prominent in the storylines than we’ve seen before, and I think that’s working well. Mostly, with this episode, we got a bit of a history lesson (a concept that I believe was part of the very early origins of the show), and perhaps a bit of a reminder for the future…
“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” –Β George Santayana
Perhaps it’s time to look around and take stock of where we stand right now?

Another Year, Another Coffee

It’s my birthday today! Yayyy! I am 7 in dog years today πŸ˜€
Went to Rafter and RoseΒ for breakfast this morning with Hubby – we were pretty much the first ones there, so had our pick of the tables.

The other side of the board – not my sentiments this morning. I love everybody today!

Sat in the corner, with a good view of the empty early morning streets.

The cake/muffin selection above was amazing – we got some to take home, but opted for a breakfast. This was one portion, but we shared.

My mocha…

The design was either a swan or the Sorting Hat.Tasted gorgeous.
We ate and chatted, and I revelled in being able to go out and enjoy a meal without incident. The music was a selection of 80s music, which made me feel young… Started eating with the Eurythmics and finished with this –

Yes, I did sing along…

Here’s some more random interiors from the cafe.

Curious Things To Dream By…

A few weeks back, I received some perfume oils that I’d ordered from Etsy. It was a bit of a frivolous purchase, but I still had money left over from Christmas, and thought I would treat myself.
The vials are tiny (0.5ml), but you only need a little to go a long way! I searchedΒ my fandoms and found them at Marie DeMars’ Curious Things shop. Click on the name < to link through to the shop, and wear your own fandom out! πŸ˜‰
I got a three vial sampler for Doctor Who and another for Sherlock…

perfume

Guess which is which!

perfume too

The scents –

Doctor Who
Petrichor – The scent of rain on dry earth – one of my favourite scents in nature. This one is not as strong as some of the others, but I’ve enjoyed it on a couple of occasions where the day is overcast and gloomy.
Amelia – “Dark space, warm earth and smoky apples”. I love this one – it really “fits” me, somehow.
Corsair – Amber, coffee, eastern spices and honey. I’ve only tried this once – very nice. I love spicy scents, and you can’t go wrong with added coffee!

Sherlock
Moriarty – Lavender, mint and Earl Grey tea. IΒ love this one! It’s easily my favourite. The fragrance lingers, and makes me happy. I would use it every day, but then it would run out more quickly. I’ll have to get some more then πŸ˜‰
Sherlock – Sweet tobacco, copal, amber, jasmine. Copal and amber are resins used in varnishes for violins. I was a bit disappointed with this, at first – I felt that the tobacco was too strong. I’ve worn it a few times since, though. The tobacco is a little strong at first application, but sweetens as I wear it. It probably won’t be a signature scent for me, but good for certain moods.
The Woman – A mixture of different things – “floral, earthy, spicy and seductive” – on me, lovely and sweet πŸ™‚

I also received a complimentary (yay!!)Β ColonyΒ solid lotion bar (honeysuckle, blood orange, copaiba balsam). Not highly scented on me, but nice as a hand cream.

So, my frivolous little purchase, there. I’m glad I took a chance, though. I’ve been reminded this year of the place fragrance holds in my life – it might not be absolutely essential – but it’s important. It can uplift on a grey day, trigger sweet memories, help calm when needed. It’s worth experimenting with different types – floral, spicy, earthy… sometimes, I prefer the ones that are considered more “masculine”. I’m not necessarily the floral type πŸ™‚ Give me a proper rose oil, though, and I’m happy!
I like all the perfumes I have here, but some more than others. That’s mostly because they react differently with my skin – a perfume that smells wonderful on you won’t necessarily be wonderful on me – we’re all different. I like that these are essential oils in a seed oil. Alcohol based and synthetic perfumes make me feel ill, so I don’t tend to walk down certain aisles in the supermarket now.

Check out the shop link above ^. Try a new perfume in your life!
