Green

Made classic pesto today – the basil is taking over the garden.
Took me most of the morning to wash and strip two of the biggest bushes…
The basic recipe (adapt as needed) is –

2 cups of fresh basil, packed
3 tbspn pine nuts
3 tbspn parmesan
2 large cloves garlic, crushed
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

You can use other nuts or herbs – experiment! Just don’t do what I did and think I could whip it up in a blender – the blades won’t handle it. The mincer attachment on the juicer didn’t work too well either… Perhaps a food processor would be better?
The finished result. It doesn’t look as green as it should – possibly too much handling. Tastes good, though!

Digging

We went to help some friends with a bit of digging today – posts going in soon, so the holes needed clearing up. The main bulk of it had been done mechanically, but the holes were too deep and too narrow for an adult to fit intoΒ andΒ bend to dig. Thankfully, there were plenty of children around to lower in…

Here’s my littlest bean, having a great time (It doesn’t seem as deep in the photo – the grass is where the top was). He got stuck in and worked really hard – because, as he says, “When a friend needs help, you roll up your sleeves and DIG!” πŸ˜‰

A fun, unexpected get together… the adults fetched and carried (buckets, dirt etc), or did some digging out with long handled tools. Biggest boy helped shift bits of wood. And then we all sat down and had dinner together, and talked. It’s good to have friends!

45

Had my birthday a few weeks ago – turned 45. How did that happen?
I know I’m getting older. The creeping aches and pains, and other signs, keep that in my mind. Somehow, though, I still have a corner of my brain that registers as “20-something”. It can sometimes be a shock to be confronted again with the truth!

I had a lovely, but low key day. We were holidaying on Bribie Island (not much for bright lights/big city…) Our school year has started a couple of weeks late, but we needed the break – we’re a lot calmer, and healthier, than we were before we left.

So, I started my birthday with a coffee at a bookshop/coffee place with free wifi. That’s a good way to start the day…
My boys both got me presents they thought I would like, and their choices were so different, and so them! Littlest bean had made sure he had a present before the day – he got me a white chocolate Freddo frog (and then kept checking back throughout the day to make sure I’d eaten it… ) Biggest boy waited till he saw me looking at a Celtic style ring at the Abbey Museum (the trip there was one of my birthday treats) He asked me if I liked it, and when I said “Yes”, took it and bought it for me. Hubby organised the day to include the things I wanted to do (and later added a heart necklace. Because he’s cool like that πŸ˜‰ ) I didn’t get stacks of expensive presents – but each one was chosen and given with love, and tailored just for me. That makes them priceless πŸ˜€

We finished the day eating fish and chips by the beach, as the last of the sun streamed through the clouds.

I couldn’t see the image until I downloaded it later – the light makes it hard to see the screen. But there – that gap in the clouds – that’s my birthday heart. I know it’s a bit vague – but it’s tailor made for me πŸ˜€

Looking Back

The six weeks of Christmas holidays always seem so long, don’t they? We had a mostly lazy time, making it harder to settle in to another year of school (as littlest bean said after a morning of maths and grammar, “I think my brain is turning to mush!” We told him that meant it needed more exercise πŸ˜‰ )
We’re off on two weeks holiday on Saturday, so that won’t help things… we’re planning on sneaking in some educational field trips, though, so we don’t get too rusty..

Last week, I took a little trip into my past. I’ve done this a couple of times since moving back to Australia, but it just felt like a good time to wander down memory lane. I used to live in New Farm, back when it was a still part cosy neighbourhood… I took the train to the Valley, walked up to the New Farm Deli..

new farm deli

..didn’t feel much different.

Off to New Farm park – it was hotter that day than the weather forecast had promised. It was nice to sit in the shade for a bit, and the breeze was coming in from the river.

new farm roses

Didn’t really check out the famous roses…

Walked to the Sydney Street ferry, so I could check out the old place where I lived. It’s not there now, of course – it was demolished not long after I left.
There’s a cafe on the corner now, though – if that had been there then, I would have been down there all the time πŸ™‚

The building you can see is some sort of hairdresser, I gather – the cafe’s behind it. I remember it as an old, abandoned corner shop.
Picked up a frangipani to put behind my ear, on the way to the ferry. Up to that point I hadn’t been much affected by nostalgia, but the ferry ride to the city made me choke up a little. Not sure why.

Went through the Mall to South Bank, via a market, where I picked up a goat pie and a freshly squeezed mango juice. Bought less books than anticipated at the Lifeline Bookfest. Got home eventually, where I fell exhausted into bed and slept longer than I have in ages…

It was a strange day, looking back. I wasn’t looking for great insights or major revelations… just curiosity, really.
Went in to town here this week, enjoyed a chai.

Go to Urban Pantry – it’s worth it!

It came to me as I was randomly ruminating… it’s been a long time since I was that young, insecure girl. I had fun then, and was fairly free (no kids!). I could do what I wanted, really… but I spent my time waiting. Waiting to figure out what I wanted. Waiting for the courage to step out one way or another. Waiting for a reason to be.
I’m much older now. I don’t have all the answers to life. I still make unwise decisions from time to time. I’m glad I got up all those years ago and finally decided to go to the U.K. (A spur of the moment decision – the travel agency had to courier my ticket to the airport, which I received while in line to check in for boarding, and I asked for a two year working holiday visa when I arrived at Heathrow, where they stamped me in without question… those were the days πŸ˜‰ )
It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and a whole lot of good has come from it. It’s good to look back, sometimes. It’s better to recognise there’s a future.

Walking Forward

cemetery path

I’m feeling terrible – I couldn’t feel worse!
Get me on my feet again. You promised, remember?
When I told my story, you responded;
train me well in your deep wisdom.
Help me understand these things inside and out
so I can ponder your miracle-wonders.
My sad life’s dilapidated, a falling down barn;
build me up again by your Word.
Barricade the road that goes Nowhere;
grace me with your clear revelation.
I choose the true road to Somewhere,
I post your road signs at every curve and corner.
I grasp and cling to whatever you tell me;
God, don’t let me down!
I’ll run the course you lay out for me
if you’ll just show me how.

Psalm 119:25-32 (Message)

We’re a couple of weeks into the new year, although in some ways it seems longer… nearly time to settle into the school schedule, when everything will have a bit more structure.
I came across the scripture above in my readings recently, and it resonated with me – I’ve read it over a fair few times in the last couple of weeks. Last year had its share of ill health – nothing too drastic, but wearing all the same. When you don’t know if you’ll be feeling good, bad or just so-so from one day to the next, it’s easy to start feeling like a “falling down barn”. πŸ˜‰ So far this year it’s still up and down, but it’s comforting to be reminded that I’m not on my own, and there’s still a road to Somewhere to follow.
The sermon today was on “Seizing the Moment – Through Uncertainty” – another signpost on this year’s road.

God is good.
Life is good.
…even when it’s not.

Gifts

So, the Christmas season is over, although we’re still lounging around, reading (and eating). Contemplating going out somewhere this arvo, which should be fun..
It was lovely to spend Christmas Day with all my boys.. a quiet, happy day. I love to watch them open their presents, especially when we’ve managed to sneak in something that theyΒ reallyΒ wanted, but didn’t think they’d ever get!

So, here’s the thing –
I know that Christmas is not about presents.. I wrote about that last post..
The value of gifts, to me, is that I can see the love people have put into choosing something, and the understanding, to varying degrees, of who I am. Plus, I like gifts, too πŸ˜‰

I got thoughtful things – foody stuff, miniature things, money for going out on my own for a day (or possibly staying overnight in Brisbane – anyone know anywhere cheap? πŸ˜€ ) We gave gifts, as well – I try to choose things that reflect the other person, with varying success, I suppose…

Here’s what we made for the family here –

…and “cups of coffee” as well.

Speaking of miniatures, here’s something my Mum got me, made by a friend who must have amazing eyesight (and talent!)..

Yes, thatΒ is a 5 cent piece. And the bears are jointed (movable arms and legs)!!

Just about to sort out a picnic lunch prior to our afternoon out..
Hope you found gifts of wonder and love this Christmas πŸ˜€
