Decking The Hall

…or, at least, that weird little section of the house that’s part dining nook, part kitchen extension.

The tree’s up, and snuggled into its little corner quite nicely.

My angel, who has been topping the tree for nearly 30 years.

The boys haven’t been feeling the Christmas cheer, so I put up some decorations for them.

I don’t think it helped.

As we’re in a new space, I’ve been able to change things around. Also spread them out – there’s so much space!

I did take some more rose photos, but I’ll share another anticipatory flowering…

Christmas frangipanis!
🙂

I don’t know how you’re feeling about the season.
Maybe this can help you…get your jingle on 😆

Cause Baby it’s Christmas!

Bringing The Sweetness In

Yes, it’s another rose centred post!
😆

Hello! 😀

I’ve been leaving the roses on the bush, and just letting the petals drift away when they want to.
Today we were cleaning for an inspection tomorrow, so I decided to pick some and brighten up our lounge room.

I’m so glad we have roses that are beautiful and smell sweet.
The sunshine has been pouring through the windows, sweeping dinginess before it. We’ve even been able to open the windows without fear of rain, so the perfumes of the various flowers in our garden can mingle with the scent of grass being mown by neighbours.

It’s hard to believe we’ve been here just over three months now. It seems longer than that!
We’ll get through the inspection tomorrow, then – onward to Christmas…the tree will go up and I’ll see how the decorations look in our home.

Thinking About The Tree

December is here!
Christmas songs are sneaking into my head at odd moments, and I’m contemplating putting up the tree next week.
Last year the tree stayed in its box under the bed. We didn’t know if we were moving, there were boxes everywhere, not much room…we decided to take year off decorating.
I don’t know what it is about the last few days, but I’ve suddenly leapt into Christmas mode! Christmas Day itself is just over three weeks away, so I can’t say it’s too early 🙂
Perhaps it’s because we feel settled here. Perhaps we just needed a rest last year. I’m excited to see how our decorations fit in this house.

I’ve been looking for a Nativity set lately. I couldn’t find anything in our budget that I liked, but then my Mum gave me some bits towards putting one together. Until I figure out how to make the rest of the figures, they’ll be here.

There’s even a cat in attendance!

We went to a wedding today, which was beautiful ❤
We were outside for lunch afterwards, and this was our view.

As trees go, these were quite majestic.

I’ll still enjoy my little fake tree with nearly thirty years of accumulated baubles…

Just to start off the Christmassy season with a smile – and an acknowledgement that Christmas here is considerably hotter than some other parts of the world (even if we’re not in LA).

And a bonus – this is more of a “winter” song than a “Christmas” song, but we’ve had the air conditioner on, and this made me (happy) cry.

Now The Song Is Over

Another of my favourite singers gone – Shane MacGowan, who died yesterday.
I have to say, I didn’t quite keep up with his post-Pogues career, but a handful of Pogues albums were among the CDs I carted around Europe and the UK when I was travelling in the mid-90s. I had one of those big zip up CD holders, and a portable CD player that chewed up the batteries, but kept me company on my travels.
I haven’t listened to them lately.
Fairytale Of New York is one of my favourite Christmas songs. It’s possibly not for the fainthearted, but it is oddly…romantic? Optimistic?
Pogues songs seem to me to have been a mixture of drunken Irish ditties, romantic ballads, and some deep thoughts on life, death, and society and its inequities. For a supposed punk band, there are a lot of beautiful songs.
Shane’s voice is part of the soundtrack of my youth.

Thank you for travelling with me.
Down all the years. Down all the days.

Let The Storm Rage On…

At least for a couple more minutes!
We’ve had a few bucketloads of water dumped on us, but it seems to have disappeared now.
The skies were brooding, and there was some spectacular lightning, but now it’s all sunset and light.
Still, the rain we have had has made the grass shoot up a bit. Also this –

I’m not sure what it is, but I’m thinking something in the gourd family? I shall let it grow and see what happens.
My rose bush is still throwing out flowers, seemingly from nowhere. I have so many photos I could bore you with. I’ll just choose some 🙂

Abundance!

So delicate, and so beautifully formed.

Little living works of art.

This is from today, complete with raindrops!
Of course, my other plants are loving the rain.

The frangipani seems to have settled in.

This last couple of weeks have had their ups and downs.
I’ve done more around the house lately – even got the linen cupboard sorted today.
Had a clinic visit last week to look at some stuff – nothing major, but niggly. Have you ever been to one of those doctors who talk over you, never seem to hear what you’ve actually said, speak like they’re trying to catch you out – as though you’re being sick “wrong”.
Yeah.
Felt quite discouraged for a few days.
Still, maybe I should just – let it go…
I’ve taken some things on board, and have also decided to put some things back in place that I’ve let slide.
And there’s always the chance to have a cuppa out.
Went to our usual place last week. It’s been rearranged a bit.

There’s treasure to be found!

We usually try to sit on the sofa, but that’s suddenly moved to the window.

Think I’ll try for that rocking chair next time 🙂
Wherever the chairs are, I will still enjoy my hot chocolate.

…and continue to muse on beauty, even in the storm.

The Chimera Springs Into Being

I had high hopes for a cooling storm at the end of last week. The forecast had been for rain, with a bit of a temperature drop.
Unfortunately, that forecast kept changing every time I looked, even though the sky was trying to tell a different story!

This was the sky last Friday, at 2.30 in the afternoon.
Yes – that is the sun trying to break through.

The weather kept holding out the promise of change, only to snatch back the hope at the last minute…
It was cool enough for me to sit for a bit in my sunroom, browsing through my art/creating books.

We’ve all been getting over a virus, so I still needed the fan on. And some music, of course.

So – here we are in the new week. The longed-for rain and cool weather has arrived 😀
I have, quite literally, been chilling today.
It’s been too wet to go outside much, but I did go to check out my roses. From a straggly, thorny, too large bush without leaves, it’s suddenly become a showcase of pink loveliness.

Still thorny, though.
There are roses in various stages of life. I was happy with the two or three I’ve had so far, but there seems to have been an explosion of buds just in the last few days.

Should I leave them to grace the garden, or cut them to bring inside?
While I get around to deciding, I can enjoy my cold(ish) toes, and my new French Earl Grey tea. It’s a combination of vanilla, rose, lavender, and the bergamot of ordinary Earl Grey.
A bit like sipping an indoor garden!

Drowsing In The Summer Heat

At least that’s part of the reason!
We’ve had a bit of a virus drifting round the house this week, so we’re all a bit languid at the moment. The heat hasn’t helped…
Littlest Bean has had the worst of it, but even my Babe spent a large part of yesterday sleeping.
Lots of cups of tea and snacky things happening.
Still, there’s time to smile.

I’ve been reading a lot, but also listening to cool music 😀

Or if I’m feeling a bit more energetic…

Time to turn the air conditioner on again!

Raindrops On Roses…

Sadly, no whiskers on kittens.
(Not that we make a habit of de-whiskering kittens).
A storm is grumbling and blustering outside, and I am happy to be sitting snugly in my room.

I can’t say that this has been the most productive of weeks, but I did manage to fix my little boudoir chair.

It’s been sitting, cushionless, downstairs – waiting for me to wrestle with padding and not-quite-big-enough material.
I think it’s turned out OK.

My roses are busily budding.

It’s not that long since the bushes were bare sticks. This little bud appeared a few days ago.
Speaking of sticks…
my frangipanis were each basically one sad looking stick in a pot.
The rain has cheered them up.

I have been told these geraniums are native to Australia.

They’ve been popping up in various places, peeking out from beneath their bigger cousins.
Just to think bigger still…
here are some of the patterns on the bark of the huge tree in the back corner.

So pretty!

The rain seems to be calming down a bit.
We’ll see what the garden says tomorrow.

And – back to my roses.
Here’s what happened to that sweet little rosebud a day or so later.

All The Sweet And Little Things

It seems like summer has just been peeking round the corner, then darting back in again.
I washed the quilts a couple of weeks ago, but we had to drag out some blankets the other night. Today was meant to be very hot, but didn’t seem as bad as expected.
Still, there’s too many fires across the state, and not enough rain.

Mondays are my biggest laundry and cleaning days. Yesterday was cool enough to get all that done (and dry!) within a few hours, and still leave a bit of energy for pulling out some weeds and organising the big wrought iron rack for my plant pots.

Little bits and pieces, adding up to big bits of sweetness…

I enjoyed some intrumental music recently, while sorting through stuff and inhaling a mixture of frankincense and rose oil. Very soothing, although most of the house picked up the scent, which lasted for the next couple of days. I also had a soak in a warm(ish) bath with magnesium flakes and a few drops of rose oil.
It’s amazing how strong roses can be.

I’m still finding little things I’d forgotten I had.
My little wooden cat is quite light, but seems able to handle a couple of rings.

A couple of tiny photo frames from when I was young…

My face seems to be cracking.

A sweet little teddy, to grace the CD tower.

Part of tidying has been tearing out some weeds that have been trying to take over.
The asparagus fern in the front was almost smothering part of the hedge. A fair bit of it has gone – there’s still remnants lurking in the undergrowth, but they’ll be sorted soon.
One of the nicest things about getting rid of it has been finding two more rose bushes, sadly lost for a while, but now able to spread out into the sunlight.
I was happy to see them, but they were scrawny and leafless. I didn’t have high hopes for them, and hadn’t thought much about them.
Until – a splash of pink amongst the foliage!

🙂

Wanna see a close up?

Such a beautiful thing.
Growing, and blooming, regardless of whether I noticed it or not.

Sometimes, the heat gets too much.
The small things seem too inconsequential.

And then, a rose just reaches for the light, and does its best to live.

The Elephant In The Room

There are various nooks and crannies in this house, just waiting for beauty.
Books, of course, are what I choose first…
I also have a collection of jewellery. I don’t wear jewellery that much, but I love looking at it. The wardrobe that came with our room has lots of shelves, so I have space to hang up my sparklies 😀

Finally, a way to display my medals (from virtual challenges).
Also, a place to hang up necklaces so I can see them, and they don’t attract dust.

I had a good week for most of last week, and got all sorts of washing, cleaning and organising done. This tends to culminate in some days of not so good, which was the last few days. This morning I felt I was turning the corner a bit (and today has been better), but Biggest Boy came in to say good morning to me, and the first thing he said was, “You look really sick!”.
Such encouragement for the new week 😆
I have had my moments today, but I think what he was seeing was a combination of middle aged lady and lack of sleep – dark circles under the eyes, with an overall crumpled, bleary look…
Still, it’s been a good day.

But – what about the elephant?
Here he is!

A tiny little being from the charity shop ❤
There’s just enough room for a tealight (via a flap at the back).
So many ways to light up a room…

And to bring some more cheer – another fun song! Complete with what I think is a depiction of the way the years seem to speed up as life goes on (and how that sometimes feels…).

Just tell ’em we’re survivors!
😀
