A Grand Day Out….

Today I went out to a lovely garden centre/restaurant to meet up with a group of beautiful women I know from a message board we are all on…

Here we all are! πŸ˜€ I only have the one photo (we were too busy talking…) We laughed – a lot… learned a few things… (learned a few words….)…. shared life… it’s been too long since we last met, but hopefully a lot sooner till we meet again πŸ˜€ We’re looking at a lovely cafe here… I’ll be able to walk down there…

It’s great to have friends you can let loose with. I am blessed with quite a few friends like that, and today reminded me why it’s important to “find your tribe” ….
I like knowing I can talk to my friends about anything, and be understood (or at least given the benefit of the doubt πŸ˜€ ) – that I don’t have to censor what I say in case it’s used against me, that I’m given the courtesy of truth in return…

If you’re reading this and you’re one of those friends – THANK YOU!!! πŸ˜€

Finished off the evening with my honey bun and honey boys at the jazz, wine and blues festival in Queen’s Park. We stayed till nearly 7.00pm, then home for tea and tv…

I think I have been irritating hubby – every so often, apropos of nothing, I pipe up, “I’ve had a LOVELY day!”. He smiles and says, “Yes, dear”…..

The Secret to Homeschooling….

….not that I have THE secret πŸ˜€ I just pick up some things relating to my sweet beans, and how they relate to the world….

Yesterday we went back to “school” after the Easter break. We started off fairly quietly, just easing into the week….
Now, with my biggest boy, since he’s previously had a few years in the school system, I know not to label too many things as “school work”. He seems to automatically equate that with “boring”. He still needs to do the work, but I try to emphasise the work/learning part of it rather than the school part of it…. that’s not to say that he can get away with not doing things to the best of his ability if they happen to be tagged as “school”Β – learning to do the boring things with grace and diligence is an important life skill….

Anyway…. the secret… πŸ˜€ I suppose it’s to know when to separate the “school” from the “work”, and show them that learning new things is a joy… here’s the story that got me thinking about it…

My littlest boy finished his maths workbook before the holidays. We couldn’t manage to get the “proper” workbook for him, but I picked up a cheap maths book for a couple of dollars at a book sale. It looks slightly different, but the work is almost exactly the same.
Nevertheless, he sees it as a new adventure… a new book he doesn’t associate with school, but is like a puzzle book to him… I started him with a few pages yesterday to get into the week. He came back to me three times to ask if he could do more – I had to stop him eventually, as he would have finished the book before this week was up!

I’m working on changing the schoolwork/boring thought pattern -it’s not so much of a problem with littlest bean, as he’s only been in kindy, but he still feels it, a bit….
… but it’s lovely when they find something that interests them so much, it transcends the “boring” label…

Yayy for exciting learning adventures!… and may your day be filled with love, growth and laughter! πŸ˜€

Hearts From God

I believe God sends me hearts…

I know that probably sounds frivolous…. but He knows me πŸ˜€ He knows I love hearts (and flowers!)

Over the last six months or more, I’ve found little hearts in all sorts of odd places… my heart has been shattered and broken in that time, and He has let me know He loves me, at times I had almost lost sight of that….

The most recent was last week… I was sitting on my verandah, praying through some stuff…. I opened my eyes and looked up, to see a cloud, shaped like a perfect heart…. it disintegrated fairly quickly (no time for a photo!), but I caught the message πŸ˜€ Others would hear that message in other ways…. but this is a way for me… and it’s fun, as well!

Here are some photos I’ve taken over these last months…. (I know my close up photography’s not brilliant…)

The one above was taken a while backΒ – it’s probably one of the first I documented. Most of them have been fleeting (often clouds), so I haven’t photographed a lot.

It’s Good Friday today….

I enjoy my “God hearts”…..

But here’s a more permanent, and effective reminder…

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” – Romans 5:8

I’m so glad God knows me enough to know what will lift my heart at those times when I really need it….

I’m even more glad we have Easter!

The rest of Romans 5 is pretty good, too – have a read!

“Come and meet Jesus”

Have just finished re-reading a book by Adrian Plass, called “The Unlocking (God’s Escape Plan for Frightened People)”. I highly recommend his books – you get to meet Jesus while alternately laughing and crying… This one is a book for Easter – a devotional from Shrove Tuesday to Easter Sunday. He calls it a “Let’s-look-honestly-at-where-we-are-now-and-talk-to-God-about-moving-to-somewhere-else” sort of book…..

It’s not a how-to, or deeply theological/Hebrew/Greek roots etc kind of book. Just God, really….

Here’s an excerpt I wanted to share…

Come and meet Jesus

You are standing alone outside the door of a huge, dark old traditional church, somewhere in the depths of East Anglia. It is a weekday evening in late autumn. Dusk has fallen and it seems most unlikely that the church will have been left unlocked and vulnerable in such a desolate area. But a cold November wind is whistling through the poorly tended graveyard, so you decide it might be worth a try. To your surprise, both the outer and inner doors are unlocked, and you are able to pass easily, if rather timidly, to the interior of the building, shutting the heavy old door carefully behind you as you go. You are a little worried that someone may be Β doing something important inside. They might be annoyed by your intrusion.

There is someone there. Behind the altar rail, far away at the opposite end of the church, lit by a large candle on either side of him, a man is facing you – waiting quietly. Somehow you know it’s Jesus, and that he wants to give communion to you with his own hands. You very nearly give in to the temptation to escape. It would be so easy to pull the studded oak door open and run through the porch into the cold night. Instead, you walk towards the altar with your head bowed, frightened to meet his steady gaze because – because. You kneel at the rail and wait, still looking at the floor. A moment later you become aware that he has knelt too. His hand is gently lifting your chin until you can’t help looking straight into his eyes. He speaks softly to you.

What does he say?

In the meantime…. as we travel towards Easter….

What did he say to you? πŸ˜€

Brothers

Yesterday my littlest boy decided to write us all letters. Hubby and I each got an envelope saying “To Mum/Dad”, and inside it said “I love you, from (littlest boy)”. Big brother got an envelope saying “To (big brother), Have a good night at yf (youth) groop” and inside said, “I love you”…

I love how they love each other so much πŸ˜€ They have their little spats, but my heart just glows when they do little things like this….

I am a very blessed mummy!

Consider the Weeds

β€œAnd why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.” Matthew 6:28,29

I have been contemplating the weeds in our yard. They made me think of this verse…. quiet, unassuming, seemingly good for nothing….

… yet still beautiful, in their small, unobtrusive way.

Who decides what is a weed? I suppose the level of invasiveness has something to do with it. Perhaps what I am seeing as beautiful is also destructive in some way – I’m not a good enough gardener to know πŸ˜€

Here’s what I saw today –

These have tiny little flowers, a few mms across. They’re dotted about the place, looking happy.

This one has a tiny purple flower. I couldn’t find one open… it’s normally a similar size to the yellow one. They hide in amongst the grass, occasionally flashing a bit of colour.

I love the shape of these.

At least three different types – a mini garden!

So, what do I get from this? Maybe that I should shine.. sparkle with colour… even if no-one notices. That I should, like the weeds, or the lilies of the field, shine for my King, regardless! πŸ˜€

Words

I was looking through some poetry today, searching for inspiration….

I enjoyed revisiting some favourites…

Here’s a couple I’ve written in the inside cover of my writing book, to remind me of what I’m doing there!

What is Poetry? Who Knows?

Not the rose, but the scent of the rose;

Not the sky, but the light in the sky;

Not the fly, but the gleam of the fly;

Not the sea, but the sound of the sea;

Not myself, but what makes me

See, hear and feel something that prose

Cannot: and what it is, who knows!

Eleanor Farjeon – Poems for Children

He ate and drank the precious words,

His spirit grew robust,

He knew no more that he was poor,

Or that his frame was dust.

He danced along the dingy ways

And this bequest of wings

Was but a book. What liberty

A loosened spirit brings!

Emily Dickinson – The Poems of Emily Dickinson

Here’s a couple from Steve Turner, a writer I hadn’t heard of before a friend gave me a book of his to read. I loved pretty much all of them….

City Sunset (ii)

Tall buildings

poised

like chessmen

in cloudy fingers.

Sneaky old sun

makes

a last move.

In The End

In the end.

In the very end of the last moment,

when the filter tip of the world

is completely shadowed by a descending

heel, we’ll call in the experts

for their considered opinion.

We’ll arrange for an apocalyptic

edition of Time Magazine,

complete with artists’ impressions.

We’ll comfort ourselves with the fact

that it has never happened before.

In the end, we’ll be deciding

whether to decide.

In the very end of the last moment,

we’ll falter,

half-believing,

crushed.

In My World

In my world

I would write

of golden suns

if it weren’t

for the obscuring clouds.

I would write

of the wind-bent grass

but all the fields are tarmacked

& multistorey.

Instead I’ll be

an urban Wordsworth

writing of

reinforced concrete landscapes

& clear brown skies

where

to wander lonely as a cloud

is just not advisable

after dark.

… and my favourite…. πŸ˜€

White With Two Sugars (please)

Coffee gives you

a legal shot of

energy when your

eyelids are feeling

down.

Coffee kills time

when you’re washed

ashore on the streets

of London.

(Coffee can even

help rainstorms

disappear)

Coffee is something

to dangle your lips

in when conversation

is scarce.

Coffee is a good

place to take a

new friend.

(Coffee is an excuse

to stay half an hour

longer.)

Aquaintanceships end

on the doorstep but

friendships begin

with coffee.

Coffee can be

appreciated by all

generations.

Coffee is a multilingual,

multi-racial, liquid esperanto.

Yes.

There’s something quite

religious about coffee.
