Rummaging Through The Memories

It must be spring…
I was seized with the need to tidy some boxes through the week, and spent time wading through my life’s collection of cards, letters and other memorabilia.

I hadn’t thought it would take so long – just flip through to see what I had, then pack it away again.
Then I started reading…

What’s that thing about “sparking joy“? I don’t really follow the philosophy (I’m not that organised!) but reading through the musings of friends old and new was – joyous. I smiled over memories, and sometimes laughed out loud. Some people were in my life for a short period of time, some longer, or are still here. Some people are sadly no longer with us, leaving joy tinged with sadness. Everything I read came with senses added – not just the writers’ words but their faces, mannerisms, sense of humour and individual eccentricities.
I’m not sure when I last wrote a paper letter to send through the mail. I don’t know that I get as much enjoyment from an email, although they are more convenient, and a lot faster. You can’t really touch an email…
I have cards from early birthdays. Letters from school friends. Bits of paper (“letters”) from my boys when they were tiny. The oldest letter I have is one from my Dad, sent while he was working away from home for a bit. I was 10, and I’m sure I was excited to get a letter all my own! It starts “Hello, little sweetheart, how are you? I hope you’ve been behaving yourself.” 🙂
I felt like I was looking at little snapshots, not just of my life, but my world in general.
Overall, it’s been a good life so far.
I’ve got the documents (and memories) to prove it!

Unicorns And Dandelion

…and Sweet Beans!
Today is my Sweet Bean’s 17th birthday. It’s also a school day, so he’s been working hard – two mock exams done in the last week, and assessments in for the term. Just course work to catch up on, but it means that birthday celebration will wait until the weekend.
Pizza and ice cream for tea, though!

In the absence of wild partying, I can only enjoy the grey peacefulness of the day with my new unicorn mug and dandelion coffee!

August Storm, Appearing

This afternoon a storm came up unexpectedly – at least I didn’t expect it! I was reading on the patio in intermittent sun when suddenly the day seemed to drop into darkness. I looked up into deep grey clouds rolling in fast, closely followed by thunder and rain.
Here’s a snippet 🙂

This whole year has felt a bit like that…
Fires, pandemic isolation, not to mention all the individual challenges we’ve each had to face so far. Sometimes it all gets a bit overwhelming, and the storm descends while we’re still unprepared.
I’ve noticed the songs YouTube recommends to me often have a “let’s get through this” theme lately. We’re all walking into each day, wondering what will happen. The creative people of the world are sharing those thoughts in song.
We’re prone to being taken unawares by the eccentricities of nature, whether flood, fire or global health crisis. For all the great strides science and medicine have made in the last century or so (and I’m grateful for what’s available!) we seem to forget that we don’t completely control this world – and sooner or later we have to come to terms with that.
I believe that God holds my life in His hands, and that helps when everything is uncertain. It doesn’t guarantee a life free from challenge or pain, but it does provide help and comfort when the clouds descend…

My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart
    and my portion forever.”
– Psalm 73:26

GISHful Thinking

Once again I’ve been making my way through the global scavenger hunt known as GISH. There have been stay-at-home minihunts this year (because of quarantine) but this was the week long hunt that comes along each August. This is my third time around… some things were easier, but mostly it’s a case of diving in and making the best of things…
The list drops on the first day, which tends to be late night/early morning here, as it’s based in the U.S. There are generally over 200 items, with more being added or modified during the week. There’s a mixture of art/craft/writing items, charity donation items, social activist items, or just plain weird stuff… I generally look through the list straight away and choose some, then check it throughout the week for more. It doesn’t seem to matter how often I look at it – I always get to the end and look at other people’s creations, thinking, “What item was that?!”.
If all this sounds interesting, check the website – you should be able to sign up soon for next year (or possibly some smaller ones before that?).

I had a lot of fun, as I always do. I was in the same team as last year (Hi! fellow GhostGISHers! 🙂 ) and we all worked hard – it’s fun doing the items, but it’s better having people to share the weirdness with! ❤

Here are my submissions, in the order I did them –

38 – Writer’s Block.

IMG_2810 (2)

215 – KIDS MENU There’s a tiny fairy secretly living in your house! Take a picture of the proof.

IMG_2814 (2)

41 – Antisocial butterfly.

IMG_2821

157 – In our April Hunt, our beloved friend, photographer and humanitarian Giles Duley, hosted a ‘storytelling in photography’ panel in which he spoke of the empowering act of turning the camera on yourself (literally or metaphorically) to tell your own story. (If you missed it, you can watch it HERE.) It’s time to take a page out of Giles’ book: create a self-portrait that accurately illustrates some facet of yourself and your story that you would like to reclaim to empower yourself. Caption the portrait in a footnote that explains briefly what your image communicates.

Untitled

117 – Dinner tonight? Mom’s famous feetloaf. We said what we said.

IMG_2865 (2)

205 – New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern has led her nation to being one of the few to get COVID completely under control. Create a portrait of her, carved into the side of a kiwifruit, in honor of a job well done.

IMG_2896 (2)

170 – Bogie and Bacall. Sandy and Danny. Doc and Marty. Turner and Hooch. Some movie duos stand the test of time, and Misha and the Queen are no different. Draw or paint a poster of HRH and Misha as an iconic pairing in a scene from a classic or beloved film. You must digitally (or old-fashioned) paint or draw this. You’re not permitted to simply photoshop their heads on the bodies of actors on a movie poster. For obvious reasons, you may not depict any scene from Titanic or Gone With The Wind.

IMG_2902 (2)

22 – Depict something you struggle with (mental health issues, a personal issue, etc) as a strange cryptid you encountered in the woods. Portray yourself befriending it as a new camp buddy or defeating it powerfully.

IMG_2914

27 – Thigh-high crocs.

IMG_2930 (2)

88 – In the past, we asked you to Salt and Pepper Iron Man, so it seems only fitting you create a Spice-Art tribute to Iron Man’s creator, the late, great Stan Lee. Whether it is the man himself, or his comic book creations, create a Spicy-Art tribute to Stan. Excelsior!

IMG_2941 (2)

138 – Mother loves your macaroni art, and we’d hate to disappoint her. Paint a perfect recreation of Whistler’s Mother on a single piece of elbow macaroni.

IMG_2974 (2)

I also did the big donation item (Change A Life), but I had trouble getting it to work, as the website wouldn’t let me make a page. I did eventually sort it out, and we got some donations, but it was too late to get what we needed for the item…
Here it is anyway!

161CHANGE A LIFE. This year, the Black Lives Matter movement helped cast a spotlight on the United States’ approach to criminal justice, highlighting ugly truths about a prison system badly in need of reform. The US criminal justice system disproportionately targets people of color, subjecting them to brutal, harrowing punishments that would be inhumane regardless of the alleged infraction that brought them behind bars — and many prisoners are detained and denied basic human rights behind bars despite being guilty of minor offenses or of no crime at all. Every year, over 600,000 people enter prison gates. Even more troubling, 10.6 million people cycle through local county jails each year. To complicate matters, the COVID-19 pandemic has turned correctional facilities into death camps. As cases spread through overcrowded prisons and jails, social distancing becomes impossible, masks and other personal protective equipment are scarce, access to alcohol-based hand sanitizer is often banned, and medical care has a long history of neglectful treatment. We’re going to try to do something to protect people at risk of oppression and human rights violations in the United States Criminal Justice System.
YOUR MISSION In partnership with Dream Corps (a 501 (c)(3)), we’re setting a goal of raising $100,000 to help close prison doors and open doors of opportunity for people incarcerated in the United States who are being subjected to inhumane and unjust treatment. To be clear, this isn’t an issue of guilt or innocence; it’s a human rights issue. No person should face abuse or risk death due to a lack of adequate resources and proper, humane treatment. WHAT TO DO: Create a fundraiser page here and get at least 10 donations of a minimum of $10 (GoFundMe’s lowest denomination). WE ARE NOT ASKING YOU OR YOUR TEAMMATES TO DONATE. Rather, we ask that you reach out to the global community and your social networks to make a contribution. Then, submit a screenshot of your fundraiser showing 10 donations and the total amount donated to us for your points.
WHAT YOUR DONATIONS DO: Your donations will help fund Dream Corps’ efforts to “#cut50” — a bipartisan effort to cut crime and incarceration across all 50 states – while moving the needle toward criminal justice reform on several levels to create a more equitable and just system. Funds from this campaign will go to programs that: (1) create dignity and safety for incarcerated people. (2) provide critically needed policy change that expands life-saving treatment, testing, sanitation gear to protect those behind bars from the pandemic, (3) fight for badly-needed legislative prison reform that reduces incarceration and provides fair chances for people when they return to communities, and (4) support advocacy programs that help formerly incarcerated leaders share their experiences with those empowered to change the system – changing minds, hearts, and laws. We invite you to please join us in achieving our goal of raising 100,000 to help change the lives of people who experienced atrocities and prejudices similar to Pamela Winn. DONATIONS ARE 100% TAX DEDUCTIBLE AND 100% OF THE DONATIONS GO TO THESE EFFORTS (for countries other than the U.S., deductions are contingent on your laws).

All in all, a great week! 😀
Some of the staging for photos made me tear my hair out a bit, some of the items required ingenuity to complete. The “feetloaf” tasted fine, although the boys refused to eat the toes!
I wasn’t too well the last few days, as I was mostly just eating whatever was easiest. Unfortunately that included confusingly labelled sauerkraut, which I was reading as in date, but I eventually found to be almost a month out of date…

I’ll happily do it all again next year.
Want to join me?

Masking The Issue

Given the uncertain health environment and regulations lately, we’ve augmented our fashion range with some cool masks!
They’re made by a woman in our suburb, and we got one each for our family (Babe and I each have an extra as well). Here’s a selection –

IMG_2836

The butterflies are mine, the TARDIS print is for Sweet Bean.
My Babe, and Biggest Boy, have a black with white polka dot one and a grey small print one, respectively… you know, for formal occasions…

We’re still figuring out the best fit – might need a few adjustments, especially since most of us wear glasses. I’ve found I have to take my glasses off to read close up, since I can’t just look under them anymore! They feel a bit claustrophobic at the moment, and feel like they’re slipping a bit when I talk, but that’s probably the fit at present and will be better with adjustment.

Why did we buy them?

No, we’re not sheep, driven to mindless obedience under a draconian government.
No, we’re not terrified and scrabbling for anything to feel some measure of safety.
No, we’re not trying to look superior to everyone else (an actual accusation levelled at my Babe at the shops yesterday).

I’m not actually too bothered by the possibility of catching COVID19 – not because it’s nothing to worry about, but because our risk is very low. It’s not, however, non-existent. Even without that possibility, there’s all sorts of viruses hanging about in this season. I’ve not had flu (as in actual influenza) for over 20 years, and we don’t tend to get colds. Sniffles, maybe. And I tend to have a bit of a cough when it’s cold, especially in the mornings. At the moment that can single you out as a possible plague carrier when in public…

There are countries where it’s common, and considered courteous, to wear a mask in public during cold and flu season. People seem to understand that the mask wearer is doing so for the benefit of others, rather than their own protection (although that’s also a benefit to some extent). It’s hygienic, considerate of others and can be stylish! Here people do tend to look at you as though you’re stupid, or deluded. Why do some consider wearing a mask as an affront to them? A piece of material on my face isn’t a threat to anyone…I’ll be having a chat with my boys about not reacting if they’re challenged by strangers.
I’ve considered the question of masks in other years during flu season. Given that I tend to cough, I’ve thought about it before…not that I’m necessarily contagious (and generally I’m not – it’s more irritation), but – I could be. There’s something to be said for thinking about other people’s peace of mind when I’m coughing away in the supermarket…
At this time my odds of passing on COVID19 are low to almost non-existent. But not completely non-existent. And I know too many vulnerable people.
This is a new world, in a lot of ways. It may be the new norm, or it may be a passing thing, but for the moment – I’ll wear butterflies!

Back To Base

Looks like we may be heading back in to another period of lockdown – how stringent remains to be seen. Back to staying home and being careful when getting groceries and other necessities…
The other day it was very windy. I had to weight the bases of the airers I was putting the washing on, so they didn’t tip over or blow away.

IMG_2757

(I like big books, and I cannot lie! 😀 )

It got me thinking again about the challenges of isolation, and things learned so far. I like my own company, and regularly have to spend time by myself to regenerate. Isolation has not really been a hardship in that way, although I still enjoy talking to other people.
One of the things I’ve had to rediscover is my “base” – where I get my strength from. For me, that’s God. Spending time, learning more. Whether the night is darker than normal, or there’s rainbows and unicorns galore, I still have to rely on that basic core, to avoid meltdown when it’s hard.
I don’t know when things are going to be “normal”, or even if that will happen. I just know that I have to stick close to the One who keeps me in all weather – even if it’s blowing a gale and everything’s toppling!
During my reading this morning I came across this –

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord,
    whose confidence is in him.
They will be like a tree planted by the water
that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes;
    its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought
and never fails to bear fruit.”
– Jeremiah 17:7-8

Find your base.
Get planted.
Flourish!

Whimsy And Wonderment

This will probably be a post about nothing, fuelled by a day of not much but wondering…
It all started on Sunday, with an afternoon spent watching a worship session, eyes closed, sometimes even singing along!
Lately I’ve fallen back into the trap of late nights and early mornings (waking up, not necessarily getting up), with a sleep debt creeping up on me without my noticing. Sunday night I went upstairs early and listened to some CDs I hadn’t unearthed in a while, then went straight to sleep. Nearly twelve hours later I was up again…
You’d think I’d be bright and energetic! No, still feeling lethargic – still have more debt to pay. I sat on the patio yesterday and wrote and read, enjoying the near silence and the breath of the wind in the trees.

Whenever I hear that sound, I think of the planet breathing, which then leads me to this song –

(This is where the whimsy comes in 🙂 )

Today has been a day of headaches (another side effect of wonky sleep patterns), but I’m still enjoying the earth’s breathing!
I hope you sleep well tonight –
and never lose your wonder.

A New Australian In The House

This week, finally, my Babe got his Australian citizenship!
We’ve been here for years, but for one reason or another, he’s not got around to it…and then, when he decided to, COVID19 came along. Everything suddenly got a lot slower, and there were no citizenship ceremonies – it’s a requirement to attend one to get official citizenship.
Thankfully provision was eventually made for ceremonies to be held online, and this week a ten minute chat and swearing in session meant we’re all Aussies in this household now! 🙂

I put some thought into a celebratory dinner – would it be pie and chips? Lamingtons? An all out barbeque?
In the end he just wanted something that he would really enjoy… white chocolate cheesecake

IMG_2722

(isn’t it pretty?)
…and fettuccine for dinner.
And why not?

The Word, Refreshed

The other day I finally got around to fixing my Bible cover – it’s getting a bit old, and the lovely fresh coating on the covers has become a crumbling mess around the edges. This means that a Bible study session tends to leave me looking like I’ve contracted some weird disease that has fluorescent pink spots as its only symptom…
Thankfully, I have also had some random ribbons kicking about the house for some time. Why not use them to keep the pink from shedding?
Voila! 🙂

IMG_2696

At the same time, I’ve also been reading through my old Bible, which I unearthed a little while back. I retired it some years ago… it’s been around the world a few times, dropped in the bath at least twice, and has bits hanging off it. It also has notes and underlinings from years past, so I’ve been reminding myself of those times. It’s still quite sturdy…

IMG_2697 (2)

…though crinkly!

IMG_2700 (2)

Over the years my Bible reading has waxed and waned. There are times when I’ve read it voraciously, jumping from one text to the next, remembering some other verse that relates to the one I’m reading and finding that.
There are other times where I hardly read it at all… whether through busyness, or illness where I find it hard to concentrate. When that happens, it can be hard to get back into it. The best thing at that point is to just do it! Push through the resistance and read – I find that the more I read, the more I want to! 🙂
The other thing is to write down what I hear from God, both to remember it later, and to clarify in my own mind what I’ve heard. I used to write straight into my Bible, but haven’t done that with the ones I use now. I have a little book I write in, with day and date for each entry.

IMG_2709

At the moment I’m reading Jeremiah.
If you want to ease into Bible reading, have a look at the Psalms, or the Gospel of John. Proverbs is good too. Find a translation you can easily read and dive on in!

Many, many years ago I was a glass engraver. One of the ways I “wrote down” some verses was on a glass, which we now use for Communion while we have church at home.

IMG_2713 (2)

It’s very hard to get a legible photo… there are three verses engraved on the sides –

“The Lord you God is with you,
He is mighty to save.
He will take great delight in you,
He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over you with singing.”
Zephaniah 3:17

“Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past.
See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
    and streams in the wasteland.
The wild animals honour me,
    the jackals and the owls,
because I provide water in the wilderness
    and streams in the wasteland,
to give drink to my people, my chosen ”
Isaiah 43:18-20

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord,
    whose confidence is in him.
They will be like a tree planted by the water
that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes;
    its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought
and never fails to bear fruit.”
Jeremiah 17:7-8

It’s been fun looking back at the promises and revelations from former years. Looking ahead is good…but looking back can also inform our future – whether the past is good or bad. Use the lessons learned to move forward, into growth and harvest.

Singing Folk

One thing I like about YouTube is the recommendations I get when I go there. Yesterday’s post was about bardcore, and I listened to quite a few, so now I’m getting a lot of different recommendations…
I quite enjoy folk music, but don’t really listen to it a lot. At the moment, there are a lot popping up, so I’ve wandered down that road today. It’s worth searching YouTube for something you’ve wanted to check out, then scrolling down the sidebar and choosing whatever else shows up!
In the meantime, here’s a Latvian song in praise of oaks…

an Egyptian lullaby,

an Irish love song for books (and the Irish language).

and a Greek tale of a thirsty eagle.

I’m not sure how to categorise this one – it’s a song written for a video game, but the lyrics are a Swahili translation of the Lord’s Prayer – make of it what you will!

Go forth and browse!
