The Lounge Chair Connection

“Why-y are there so many…. so-o-ongs about lounge chairs”… sorry, wrong lyrics πŸ˜€

We’re trudging in to another week of isolation, and passing time seems both fast and slow.
We’ve been attending church via Zoom, as well as other meetings and get-togethers. Here’s my special breakfast for the church service Sunday morning!

IMG_2106

Pancakes, made using both gluten-free and chickpea flour. It was surprisingly light as a mix, and yummy as well – especially with honey, lemon, brown sugar…

Over this last week I’ve also attended a gathering for IJM (International Justice Mission), as well as a worship evening with friends. I’ve looked into participating in a couple of virtual choirs, although I haven’t, as yet, recorded anything. There’s a few gatherings coming up for groups I’m in as well. I feel like my social life hasn’t been this busy in ages!

Despite this, the day has been dragging. I don’t think I go out much in normal times, but there’s something about not being able to go anywhere that makes me want to goΒ everywhere! Thankfully, there are still books to read, and shows to watch.
Also – we’re getting new water filters delivered tomorrow.

I’m so excited!

Navigating Empty Roads

We had some unavoidable appointments today, so even though we’re in voluntary isolation at the moment, there’s still some things you can’t do by phone or internet.
After the appointments were done, we thought we’d get a coffee at our favourite cafe.

IMG_2077

As per quarantine rules, they’re only open for takeaway at the moment. There are no tables inside, so we’re not tempted to stay, and you can see the tape on the floor to help with distancing while waiting. The other room is blocked off.

IMG_2078

You can phone through an order and pick it up quickly – I believe they will also bring your order to your car (if you park on the street outside) if you really don’t want to risk being around people… No cash is accepted at the moment – pay by tap.
We had a (properly distanced) chat while waiting for our coffee, talking about the situation and the changes it’s brought. I personally have had mostly good interactions with people up to now, but I know there’s been bad stuff happening – abuse of supermarket staff, hoarding and general awfulness. Talked about the difficulties of getting the fresh ingredients to make what they sell…
I wouldn’t want to be in customer service at the moment. I’ve done that in the past, and I know that even at the best of times some people can be rude, entitled and sometimes abusive. With the fear levels now, the filters are off some people’s reactions. Those on the counters in healthcare or retail situations are making the best of the circumstances, while never quite knowing if the person in front of them is passing on a virus that could seriously impact themselves or someone they love. Whole days, weeks of that is exhausting.

Choose kindness.

Slow down.

Breathe.

We drove home afterwards, in a city that felt like it was early morning – minimal traffic and pedestrians. I’ve felt lately like time has been slowing down, in a way – it’s hard to remember what day it is sometimes.
Our libraries are closed now, but over the last week or so they increased the borrowing limit from 20 items to 50. I decided that was a goal I could aim for! I now have my 50 items, for an indefinite period. I just have to find the time to read them!

I was glad to get home this morning, and finally have breakfast.

IMG_2081

We went to the cafe because we were in the area, and because we wanted to support them. It won’t be a regular thing, though, and I wanted to make it worth the trip πŸ˜€
A bigger breakfast, and definitely more sugar, than I’m used to.
No regrets.

Apart from necessities, we’ll be at home now. Probably reading…

I hope your day holds something good, whatever your situation.
Here are some cafe bunnies to cheer you!

Staying Home

Another day in the continuing coronavirus saga…
Went shopping to pick up some essentials today – no toilet paper, which we expected (we have enough at the moment), but when we tried to get some mince for Biggest Boy’s birthday dinner tomorrow (he’s 21!) – a vast expanse of empty shelves! We’ll improvise…

How shall we proceed?
None of us in this family are in the risk groups for complications even if we catch the virus, so we’re not worried there. But in our various social circles there are those who are. There seems to be some evidence to show that younger age groups (and possibly older but basically healthy?) can be carriers while being asymptomatic, so waiting until weΒ feelΒ sick to self isolate may be too late for others who are vulnerable.
We are in the fortunate position of not having to go out much – our normal life is fairly isolated. There are still some situations where we’re out of the house, or people come to us. At this point it’s a case by case decision as things unfold…
There are many who don’t have the luxury of staying home – those in essential services, those who can’t afford it, service industries… for those people, and the ill, elderly and immunocompromised, we have a responsibility to do what we can to reduce the spread of the virus.
What to do while we’re isolated?
There’s always books! My answer for everything πŸ˜€ Use your local library (before it may need to shut down?) Get as many books as you can. Have a look for books online.
Create. Write that Great Novel you’ve always wanted to. Or a poem (it doesn’t have to be “good”!) Bake cakes with the kids. Dance round the living room until they need to take a nap πŸ˜‰
There are also free courses online, or movies, in a variety of subjects – some are always free, some may just be for this period of time… also some suitable for school age children.
I’m looking forward to browsing what’s on offer!

If you’re still unsure why it’s beneficial to self isolate or practise social distancing, here’s a clip from one of my favourite shows, which demonstrates how disease spreads…

The Wood Between The Worlds

We’re in that week between Christmas and New Year, when everything seems to stop (or at least slow down…) We’ve had the glitz and bustle of Christmas, and are drifting into a fresh year. It’s a time to rest and to take stock of what’s past before travelling on.
If you’ve read the Narnia books, especially “The Magician’s Nephew”, you may think of the Wood Between The Worlds, a place where you land while using the magic rings – a peaceful, drowsy but “rich” place, a stopping place between worlds.

We’ve been reading, catching up on things, mostly resting so far this week (also eating far too much chocolate!). It’s been lovely cool weather, so it’s easy to dream… Soon enough it will be back to the daily round. At the moment –

Frangipanis And Chocolate Cake

…well, chocolate cheesecake, anyway πŸ™‚

IMG_1381

IMG_1390

Two sweet blessings from my morning!
Yesterday a lovely friend dropped off a frangipani branch, which I planted in the back yard. It was a bit top heavy, so I broke one bit off and planted that as well…
My Babe had to go for a meeting this morning, and came home with some chocolate cheesecake for me ❀

My garden has been growing (mostly)! There’s been some losses – something ate all my original sunflower seedlings as soon as they came up – but I’ve planted some more.

IMG_1387

Hello, little babies! πŸ˜€

The melons and cucumbers are flowering too; we’ll see what actually becomes fruit soon…

IMG_1389

…and I have my legless flamingo (salvaged from kerbside pickup) to watch over things!

Here’s the song this post’s title makes me think of…

A Grate Day

Some days are power days – nothing is too hard, you feel invincible and as if you can knock out your entire to do list, and start on next year’s…
Yesterday was one of those days.
Consequently today is decidedly less “power” and more “endure”. Yesterday’s invincibility led me to do a bit more strenuous activity than I’m used to, and today’s me is just ouch… with swinging moods to complete that special feeling.
(Sample conversationΒ  for today –
Random family member – “Do you want coffee or tea?”
Me – “DON’T MAKE ME HAVE TO MAKE AΒ DECISION!!!
*copious sobbing ensues*)

I can do some things to cheer myself up, but it all seems a bit like this.

Thankfully I have some low energy things on my list, and a sandalwood and rose incense stick.
Also – writing a Christmas list πŸ˜€

Random Rambling Recap (With Coffee)

The warmer weather has made me feel like tidying and reorganising the chaos that has built up in places here – there’s something deeply satisfying about making something beautiful where there was mess.
I started with the baker’s rack outside – it’s been the repository for whatever outside stuff I couldn’t find room for anywhere else…
Voila!

IMG_1071

The bottom two shelves still have pots and garden paraphernalia, but at least it’s all tidy now.
I also decided to repurpose some bits and bobs from the jewellery box.

IMG_1075

I invested in some new incense sticks (sandalwood & rose, sandalwood & musk, and frankincense & myrrh) – great for dreaming to, or anticipating Christmas!

In other news – we went to a Lifeline sale (Yay!) and picked up an old style picnic basket, with plates, glasses and cutlery ($5), a set of bongos ($5), and two good quality umbrellas ($2 each), one of which is like having a huge orange flower sheltering me from the raindrops πŸ˜€

IMG_1087

Now we can go on a musical picnic, even in the rain…

I have realised I like my hair like this.

IMG_1101

A bit messy and just the right length.
Unfortunately it only does this sometimes, and I don’t know how to make it happen. Oh well…

There’s been a bit of rain this week – not enough, but the grass is greening. Decided to plant some flowers in the back planting box, but had to dig out the neighbourhood cats’ contributions first – smelly with flies, and I had to scrub my hands a few times before I could even think of sitting down to eat. I like cats, but not when they disrespect my garden 😦
Fortunately I have sandalwood and rose incense to sweeten the air, and these sweet cats to cheer me up.

IMG_1107

We went to the opening of a farmers’ market type shop in town, and picked up a bit of cake made by another shop here, which will be occasionally supplying the market shop. I finally got to sit down and eat my cake (almond croissant, raspberry and macadamia cake, and a nice bit of crusty bread) and drink my coffee (fresh ground and brewed with cinnamon and a couple of mint leaves).

IMG_1104

The birds rejoiced, giving thanks for the rain
And all was right with the world…

The Walking Dread

I quite like to walk – that pleasant stroll through nature (or the nearby cemetery), where I can let my mind run free, or listen to some good music. At this time of the year it can be fraught with danger – it’s magpie season. At any point there’s the possibility of being swooped or chased by magpies or plovers. They’re protecting their nests but in the process can cause fear, or actual harm, to an unsuspecting passerby. This time of the year I tend to stay at home until the season’s over, but by that time it’s starting to get too hot to walk, and I’m out of the habit.
This year has been a bit strange. On the occasions I’ve been out in areas I’ve previously avoided because of swooping, I’ve had no trouble, even if I can see nesting pairs in the vicinity. I don’t know if they’re all just not being aggressive this year or lulling us in to a false sense of security before launching the bird apocalypse…

Nevertheless, I’ve twice walked home from town this week – 35-40 minutes at a fairly brisk pace. Both times I couldn’t be bothered waiting for the bus, and I haven’t really had any ill effects from it. It’s a lovely time of year – not too hot, and still a cool breeze from time to time.
I’ve wandered around town as well, in this confusing sort-of-spring/summer season. Stopped to smell the roses (and, I believe, gardenias) at a new op shop;Β they wereΒ blowsy and sweetly fragranced (the roses, not the shop).

I made it back home in good time and sat down with a good book, and a rose and elderflower cordial πŸ™‚

The Small Things

We’re halfway through the holidays, and it’s been pretty good so far. I’ve got lots of reading done – always a good holiday option. The fact that I had to read a lot this week because I borrowed too many books during term and was running out of time to finish them before their due dates doesn’t really matter…

What are the small things I’ve enjoyed this week?
– Sitting with my books in unfamiliar places (by the pool, a park down the road) – the change of scene sparked new inspirations and thought processes.
Helping Sweet Bean with some difficulties, and seeing through that what a wonderful young man he’s growing into.
Watching a friend reach a milestone on the way to even greater things.
Finally seeing some rain falling – not enough to satisfy this dry earth, but hopefully there’s more coming.
Watching the small ones around us playing and running happily through the rain!
Unexpected blessings at perfect times πŸ™‚
Old clothing once again made serviceable after mending.
Delicate flowers salvaged from the top of a delectable cheesecake…

What other small joys are in store for this week?

Spring Clean!

The first day of the holidays, and I’ve blitzed the deep cleaning I tend to put off when I’m doing the regular cleaning… feels so good to know it’s done for the time being and I don’t have to scrub anything for a bit πŸ˜€
I finally got around to sorting out the outdoor display rack as well, which has been the depository of all the junk and odds and ends, as well as dust…

spring clean

There’s even space for some new things now!
I’m feeling accomplished, but tired… decided to have a soak in the bath with some epsom salts in the middle of the day, which was relaxing but I had to fend off feelings of having to be somewhere doing something else…
A good start to the holidays, and a chance to enjoy a more completely dust and dirt free environment than usual πŸ™‚
