Another Week Of Gish!

Last year, around this time, I participated for the first time in GISH – the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt – one week during the year where normality falls away, and kindness rules, and where our entry fees and other fundraising during the week goes towards helping people around the world. This year entry fees went towards protecting people in Laos from unexploded bombs and providing prosthetic limbs for those who have lost theirs.
It was a week where I figured out how to do stuff I hadn’t done before, and remembered skills I hadn’t used in a while. It was also a tiring week
Obviously, I had to sign up for this year!

For this last week I’ve been painting, drawing or shuffling like a zombie, while other members of the team I was a part of did their items as well. Not only did I happen to have a team this year who were creative, inspirational, and participated enthusiastically, I also had my Babe and Sweet Bean on the team. What a busy, amazing, fulfilling week 🙂

Here’s my items, in order of completion…

“Write your resume as a haiku”

Gish resume item 2019_2-page-001 (1)

It’s amazingly difficult to sum up enough information for a resume in three lines…

“A tiny painting of Misha and the Queen on a coin, made using toothpicks instead of brushes. “

Gish 2019 Coin

I was quite pleased with this one. It’s not perfect – I was going for Wedgewood, but ended up with Splodge… still, I think it worked well.

“I’m not saying Jared Padalecki is a big softie, but here’s a portrait of him toasted onto a marshmallow. Just the way it should be.’

Gish 2019 Jared Marshmallow

There were tears over this one… I had a great idea for the method, but the execution of it didn’t quite go to plan. It involved twisting wire into shape, heating it over the stove ring, then pressing it into the marshmallow. Sounds great – but didn’t toast at all. Melted marshmallow is stickier than I’m happy with. Still, I’m fairly happy with the finished result. Here’s the wire stamp I used –

Next item – “Make an Assbutt of yourself in public. Literally.”

IMG_0565

This wasn’t actually my item, but I took the photo and submitted it 🙂

The next two are a family collaboration, with the help of a friend with amazing make-up and camera skills.

“FAST-MOTION. Everybody always thinks zombies are after their brains, but they’re just really into “tag”, as evidenced by the 3 zombies playing slow-speed tag in your local mall, then speed it up and send it in”

It’s strange wearing zombie make-up, but it also becomes strangely comfortable after a while (at least, it’s easy to forget it’s there). We went in to d’Arcy Doyle place for this one… we didn’t seem to be noticed by most people, but some had a laugh – except for one kind person who wanted to make sure Babe was OK when he went to top up the parking meter. He was able to assure her that he was fine…
After our gruelling time filming we needed a coffee, so went down the cafe, where they certainly practise what they preach…

IMG_5670

They were very welcoming, although we were a bit worried we’d leave bits of ourselves behind…

“Spoiler alert! Nobody has time to really sit down and read anymore. So, bring the stories to them. Recreate major plot points of classic books by acting them out at your local library. But in deference to library “rules”, you must be silent, so you’re going to have to use interpretive dance on this one. Note: If you’ve submitted a photo, you will still get credit.”

We were flagging a bit by this stage, but the local library was open late on Thursday, so we became lovelorn teenagers for half an hour. We messed up the order of events in the death scene, but I don’t think it matters.

“Create a haiku for an animal on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species that tells of the animal’s plight and why we should protect it. Next to the haiku, include a hand-drawn picture or origami sculpture of the animal.”

IMG_0577

“Create a HairBnB for head lice. Showcase all the amenities in photos. But don’t post it on AirBnB! Instead, hang your flyer where your clients will see it: at a local hair salon.”

Gish 2019 Hair BnB Flyer clearer

The local hair salon was very helpful and understood that scavenger hunts can be quite strange…

Tatsuya Tanaka creates miniature worlds with everyday objects. His scenes are whimsical, which is how the world should be… but is not always how tiny-world actually is. Create a miniature, dismal and tragic scene using small reimagined objects.”

IMG_0631

Good thing I saved all those dead insect parts…

“You know that this is the 50th anniversary of Woodstock. But did you know that Woodstock the bird from Peanuts first appeared 2 years earlier? In 1967? So actually Woodstock the bird is 52. He’s drunk a lot of beer over the years and can’t hide it, but he is vain, so he’s had lots of work done. Tons of collagen and botox. He wears a toupee. He dyes his feathers. Show us what he looks like today.”

IMG_0660

I enjoyed this one, and it came out better than I thought it would.

“PUZZLE. New Item, Who Dis? 3×3=9, null=0. And that’s the Tea. Don’t get your wires crossed! When you think you’re done, the fun’s just begun…”

This was the last one I did, or at least partially did. The strings of numbers below translated to clues using a T9 cipher, but I only worked out some of the answers to the clues… It was about Pierre Frederic Sarrus, who created the Sarrus rule (mathematics), and involved General Sarris, the villain from Galaxy Quest. I didn’t get much further than that, but others solved it, so I eventually found out that I should have done a cross stitch of Sarris calculating the Sarrus rule.
Here’s the original crossword –

Here’s my response –

My Babe also did his items – the first two were done on the same day as the zombies.

“You’ve been out fishing for compliments, and you just snagged a whopper.”

IMG_5644.JPG

He thought the best compliment would be a proposal ❤

“We’ve seen the pictures of dogs catching treats by German photographer Christian Vieler. Let’s see a high-speed photo of your teammate catching treats in the same style and photographic detail.”

yummy tiny teddies

This one was done with the previous night’s mashed potatoes, to help it hold together a bit.

“TIMELAPSE. This means something… Subtractive food sculpture. Start with a block of cheese or a massive mountain of mashed potatoes and without using tools, eat your way to an ornate re-creation of a famous statue.”

The last one was designed and created by Sweet Bean. He worked very hard, and I think he enjoyed his week 🙂

“They say stepping on a LEGO is the greatest pain one can experience. We Gishers laugh in the face of pain. Make shoes entirely from LEGOs – no fluffy socks or insoles allowed- and demonstrate them in use. Post it to social media and tag the LEGO accounts and @GISH.”

I’m proud of the work we got done, and awed by the work done by the others in the team. We’re definitely looking forward to next year!

Miaow!

Just taking a break from trying to figure out how to do bits and pieces for a scavenger hunt I did last year, and signed up again for this year. I seem to have mostly picked miniature items from the list – lots of squinting and cramped fingers!

Around 200 years ago someone decided to create this little gem, called “Duetto buffo di due gatti” (meaning “humorous duet for two cats”). It’s attributed to Rossini, but was possibly compiled by someone else who drew inspiration from one of Rossini’s operas. Whatever the truth of it, have a look.
Perhaps when the neighbourhood cats start up tonight, you can just pretend they’re singing opera…

Walking On The Moon

Yes, I did think of this song when I typed that…
The next couple of days commemorate the first moon landing – fifty years since that “one small step”.

It was an achievement years in the making, although apparently not without its controversies (why spend so much on that when there are so many other needs?) Perhaps not much has changed over the years, then…
I gather I got to see the landing at some stage, but as I was about five months old, I can’t really remember. Perhaps it changed the way people see the world. Perhaps we broadened our horizons. If so, there’s still room for improvement.
Whatever the case, here’s some more “moon” songs 🙂

What Was; What Is

I’ve been listening to this song, which was a recommendation for me on YouTube. Made me think…

We all have regrets – those things we’ve done, or haven’t done. Life rolls over us. Events happen, and we end up feeling scoured out by circumstance… cleaned out and hollow. The person we thought we were, wanted to be, lost in time.
Sometimes it’s the appropriate time to mourn and to heal.
Sometimes it’s time to get up again and move forward.
It’s never too late to find the good things again,
and to rekindle the fire.
What used to be can still be.
Just changed, and even sweetened, by personal history.
I can never be who I used to be – not completely.
I can be the best of who I am now.
And so can you ❤

Dancing With The Bard

It’s that time of the term again – all the work’s done, and we can finish off with a movie afternoon. Sweet Bean’s been studying Romeo and Juliet for English, so we’ve taken the opportunity to watch a couple of adaptations…
Last week we watched “Gnomeo and Juliet” – an obvious homage to Shakespeare, but not one I’d considered watching. I stumbled across a review recently and thought we’d try it out. I’m glad we did – it’s quite fun, and we could pick out the story easily. Check it out if you’d like a giggle, mixed with fun music!

Today we watched “West Side Story”, another version of the timeless story. It’s quite long compared to most movies today – there’s even the option of watching it with opening and intermission music included. I’ve never seen it, but was surprised to find so many songs that I knew. Some I would have associated with the film, but others I’ve heard over the years and never associated with it. We enjoyed matching the story with Shakespeare, as well as seeing where it veered from the source. Overall it was a good contemporary retelling of the story. Sweet Bean did have a bit of a problem with the random singing and dancing…
(…orchestral music swells in the background, as Tony wanders down a darkened alley…
Sweet Bean – “
Oh. He’s going to sing. Again”)
😀

We’re looking forward to holidays now.
How am I feeling?

Shakespeare Sings

Sounds like one of those compilation albums from the 70s…
I’ve been having a look at Shakespeare (Sweet Bean is studying Romeo and Juliet this term) and came across a BBC article on his influence on “modern music”. There’s quite a few, and some strange pairings (Metallica? Iron Maiden?). Some may only reference a line from a play in the lyrics, or even just the title. Some are sweet, some are clever. Here’s a selection.

Antony and Cleopatra

Hamlet

Macbeth

Romeo and Juliet

Sweet Cadbury, And The Size Of Food

Have you seen that Cadbury ad? I’ve been seeing it a lot lately, and I have a little sniffle and a smile every time. Yes – I know it’s scripted specifically to tug at the heartstrings and make me buy chocolate. I love it anyway.

I’ve been trying to not eat sugar lately, but sometimes a bit of chocolate seems like a happy choice for the day. I had a bit of a wander round the shops this afternoon – picked up some bargains, and a bar of chocolate for this evening. I also decided to treat myself to some KFC, as I haven’t had any in a Very Long Time… what is with the meal deals? Who would need a bread roll and mashed potato? It seems like getting more costs you less, and soft drink is part of the deal, even though I wouldn’t want it (yes, water can be a substitute, but I don’t want a plastic bottle. That I more or less am paying for.) I asked if they did any deals on one or two pieces of chicken and a small chips. Answer – not really. The cost is the same if you buy them separately. I ended up getting one piece of chicken, which I enjoyed very much 🙂  You can specify which piece you want, as well.
Tomorrow I’ll reduce the sugar/trans fats portion of my diet… I just had a bit of a holiday today 😉
Got the bus home. Enjoyed watching “My Neighbour Totoro”… which is also sweet.
And the sun set on my Very Nice Day.

Musing In The Grey

We haven’t really got out of bed today.
Obviously there’s been breakfast. And coffee. That’s just been the results of a mad dash to the kitchen and back before we get too chilly…

Such a grey and gloomy old day – hasn’t decided whether it wants to rain yet, but that definitely seems a likelihood. There’s nowhere for us to be today, so wrapping up in a duvet, reading and watching YouTube seems to be the best option.
It’s been a week of fluctuating temperatures, where it’s been hard to choose between a heavy coat and a tshirt for going out. Some days have needed both. I’ve come up against memories of childhood, and had days where I couldn’t be sure of the difference between “getting older” aches and pains, and twinges that perhaps should get further investigation. I’m still standing! Well, lounging around, but you get the point.
Had a truly amazing cupcake the other day – evocative of cheerful indulgence in its proportions and calorie content. I very much enjoyed it, but it was also a bit like swallowing a bag of sugar all at once. Still, a tasty bag of sugar served on a bright and sunshiny plate!

IMG_0287

I’ll be watching some catch up TV this afternoon, but for now I’m listening to a bit of Sara Groves… songs of remembering, and songs of hope and moving forward.
Just right for a grey day.

When Stars Begin To Fall

Woke up this morning to the news that an actor from one of my favourite TV shows died yesterday. I’m of an age now when a lot of people I remember from my childhood have died, but it’s always a bit of a shock.
I’ve always enjoyed the classic sci-fi shows (vintage Star Trek and Doctor Who, as well as their more modern revivals) but Blakes 7 was my favourite. It only ran for four years, had seemingly cheap (but not cheerful!) production, and sometimes seemed to lose its way a bit, but I still watch and enjoy it. Avon was my favourite character, so hearing of the death of Paul Darrow gave a sad start to my day. He portrayed Avon as cynical and sarcastic, but also oddly vulnerable and, at times, sympathetic. The snark is legendary…

As the series was made in the days when you couldn’t just google an episode to guard against continuity errors, it sometimes doesn’t quite hang together. The acting can be quite theatrical, the scenery in danger of falling over, and the dystopian universe doesn’t provide the feel good factor. The titular character (Blake) is only present for two series, and there never seems to be exactly seven in the crew, unless you include one or both computers – depends on who else is still alive at the time. Despite all this… watch it. You’ll be glad you did.
So, it seems that Avon is no longer with us (along with Blake, Gan, Orac/Zen and Servalan). Having originally seen the final episode back in the early 80s, and clearly remembering the shock and disbelief I felt then, I can only paraphrase a tweet I saw earlier in the day – “It occurred off camera. I choose to believe he made it out…”

Here’s a fan made music video I found on YouTube a while back. It seems appropriate.

I got the whole series on DVD a couple of years ago, so I can have a bit of a wallow in my childhood angst today. Anyone want to join me?
