The Shed

So, we’re settling in here, learning the ropes, chilling out….

To be honest, I’m enjoying the simpler life at the moment. I’ve never been that much of a “happy camper”, but it seems like we’ve got the best of both worlds at the moment. It’s still a bit strange not having running water/bathroom/toilet right there in the building with us, but they’re just a quick walk away in the house… just takes a bit of planning 😀

Here’s the shed –
We even have a verandah! There’s been a few storms since we moved in, and the front stays pretty much dry… we have a camping stove outside for gourmet cooking 😀 and loads of potted plants (purloined from my garden at the house) There was a bit of a problem with flies and mosquitoes when we came, so I have a pot of basil each side of the door (supposed to repel flies; also good with the bolognese we had tonight) and a big pot of citronella on one side (for mozzies- smells lovely, too) I’m not sure whether they’re working… I think the citronella is more likely to be doing what it’s supposed to…

Our view… quite nice 😀 The curtains are from the old house – I always liked them… It’s almost like we’re in a little holiday home..

This was taken from one end of the inside space. We’ve partitioned off an area for the boys – littlest bean’s bed is a folding one, so there’s just enough space for it at night, and it folds back against the wall in the day. Biggest boy has a desk underneath his bunk, where he has his computer and does his schoolwork. He’s hung blankets around part of the area, so we often don’t see him all morning…
The bookcase beside the rocking chair holds all manner of things… we’re pleased with the way we’ve found a place for everything… it’s just a case of consistently putting things back where they belong… hubby did the mowing/weeding today, and brought me in a small flower he’d found… I didn’t have a vase for it, but there was space to twine it into the spine of a plastic display book, where I can see it as I type..
😀

Here’s the room from the other direction –
The kitchen is at the far side, and all the crockery/linen is in the dresser at the left. The futon is our bed – it gets folded up each day (we “unmake” our bed every morning…) There’s a washing basket on the other side of the futon – the sheets/pillows are put there in the morning, the cushions at night. It normally lives on top of the plastic containers over on the right, which are our movable pantry. The desk holds cutlery, coffee making facilities (necessary for sanity) and the big water container, and littlest bean uses the desk for his schoolwork. As you can see, there’s also a space for all the guitars!
I’ve been enjoying homeschooling here. There’s a certain amount of housekeeping to do, but not much. There’s no other rooms to escape to 😀 so I generally read while the boys work and mark what they’ve done as they finish (not something I’ve consistently done before) I’m always on hand to help… it’s easier to read our book together in the evenings as well (We’re on the last book of Lord of the Rings) It feels like we’re in a season of grace at the moment.. I’ve no idea what tomorrow or next week will bring, and whether our days will move faster. Right now, I am content.

A final photo, taken just after we moved in – little boys making themselves at home!

School Is Nearly Here…

I have finally ordered the books for this year, and they are on their way… This is the site we use for the basic curriculum –

Homeschooling Supplies

Go to the “Curriculum Guide” button up the top, and choose the grade you want. This is a Victorian site, so the grades are different to Queensland (If your child is Grade 3 in Queensland, they will be Grade 2 in Victoria, etc)
I will use these books for Maths/English, with a bit of Science and Social Studies.Everything else will be a bit more eclectic, and will probably be adjusted from time to time. I’m hoping to start a History timeline this year, starting from the beginning and moving through to the present day 😀 It will (hopefully) encompass art, music, philosophy etc for each time period, as well as the bare historical facts… We shall see how that goes…

My biggest boy is starting High School this year. That should be interesting..

I have been going through piles of papers, books and workbooks recently – because of a friend who works at a school, we have quite a lot of books 😀 This year I hope to be a bit more organised. I believe the boys have been learning all they need to (and more) but I’m terrible at documentation… I’m trying to sort things out properly this year! I’m quite excited… and also feeling as though my brain will explode.. Having so much reference material is a blessing, but at the moment, also a bit overwhelming….

This will be a good year, though 😀

Gutenberg

Today we watched a DVD from our local library (We love our library! 😀 ) It was “Stephen Fry & the Gutenberg Press”, where Stephen delves into the history of Gutenberg, along with the political and social aspects of the dawn of the information era… He also got to help in a reproduction of the original printing press (from building the press, to making the typeface and paper), as well as printing a page from the original Bible.
I could only find the first bit of it on YouTube. It’s worth checking out the library to see if they have a copy…

It has inspired me to get out our paper making paraphernalia (which we have unfortunately never used) to have a look at making some paper. The boys are keen. I love that we can watch a DVD, and get a day’s worth of learning out of it! 😀

Inspirational

Today, we tried singing rounds. That was… interesting…. I think it could do with more work 😀

I had been reading the paper, and came across an article about the inclusion of famous inspirational speeches in the school curriculum. Off to YouTube we went….
We first listened to Winston Churchill’s wartime “We shall fight them on the beaches” speech..

Not an overwhelming success – the sound is not that good, and it was a bit difficult to understand. Worth the effort, though, and lead to a few discussions. We watched a Time Team (Shooters Hill) not too long ago, so we’d already discussed the mood in England at the time, and the threat of invasion.
One of the recommended videos after that was this one…

That one resonated with the sweet beans! I was primarily trying to get them to look at the characteristics of an inspirational speech – the tone, imagery etc, but we inevitably ended up discussing the issues involved. It’s instructive for them to be able to see what a different world we live in now – good and bad.
This last one provoked the most discussion. It doesn’t really need much introduction…

Again, a little difficult to hear… we watched another one (which should be on the right panel) that had subtitles… the blog wouldn’t let me upload it 😦 Have a listen!

Be inspired! 😀

A Leisurely Day

We’ve been doing school a little differently since this term started… when we get to this time of the year, it seems that we’ve done the bulk of the basics, and I have to figure out what else to do. Added to that, we haven’t been able to get new school workbooks, so it’s been a case of trawling the internet, organising what we already have, and giving heartfelt thanks for the library! 😀

Last week we focussed on music. We listened to “Peter and the Wolf”, and “The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra”. We looked at the different instruments in the orchestra, and were able to use a book from a set that was given to us by a lovely friend 😀 They’re “I Wonder Why” books, and one was “I wonder why… flutes have holes, and other questions about music”. The other questions covered everything from world music instruments to the language of dance. They had a great time, and a bit of a giggle 😀
Added to that was the normal maths/english mix, guitar lessons, a bit of baking, gardening, learning about God, and basic socialisation. Sometimes I think I’m getting this homeschool thing….

Here’s littlest bean doing some reading.. this book is about silent letters, the one before that was about fractions, decimals, and percentages. Yayy for the library!

Grandma had given them some modelling clay to practise for making Christmas presents, so they spent the afternoon making stuff…

Little bean made a “fan”… and then proceeded to make a medley of traps and bouncy castles, none of which was captured for posterity…

Biggest boy was very serious about his work, and found he has a bit of a talent for sculpting 😀

Ladybird

Snowman

Computer (complete with fingerprint!)

Penguin! 😀

Can’t wait to see what he comes up with next!

… edited to add – this is what 😀

…And Then We Danced….

I have been wanting to teach the boys some forms of dancing….

As I am… *ahem* … choreographically challenged 😉 …. my first thought was to get some DVDs from the library. This is a great idea… I just keep forgetting to do it. I do, however, have a Watoto DVD from last year. We put that on this morning, and we all danced.

Sorry about the blurring. They were moving too fast…

We tried to follow the Choir, but it’s difficult to follow when it’s so fast. We eventually decided to just worship with dance…. We danced a few songs, then watched a couple of the bonus items. The boys heard about the plight of orphans, and the way some people are forced to live…. which led to many questions and heartfelt prayer.

All in all, a good morning!
