Even Though

This song has been going through my head, off and on, for a while now.

I’ve had some wonderful times the last few weeks. I have great friends. It’s all good.

But… sometimes there’s a dark cloud, and I can’t seem to shake it. I know the sun’s still there. I know I’ll see it again, if I just keep moving forward. But sometimes, that thought is all there is, when I’m feeling that everythingisterribleandnobodylovesmeandtheycanthearmeanyway
andwhywouldtheycare?

So. Here’s a song…

Here’s another.

… because it’s getting late, and no-one’s reading this anyway.

Everyday Art

I’m reading a book at the moment (and apparently there’s a blog as well… 😀 ) – Living Artfully – Sandra Magsamen

It’s about creativity in everyday life; about how we box creativity up as only relating to “artists” or “musicians”, or whatever else you envision when you think “art”. She states that the root word for “create” means “grow” – that anything we do in a day that is growth is creativity.

I had thought that I would skim through the book, get a few ideas, take it back to the library… I’m enjoying actually reading it….

So far, there have been three stories that have been interesting to me…

The first is about a woman called Mierle Laderman Ukeles  , an artist known for her feminist and service-oriented work  .
From 1978- 1984, she travelled across New York City, shaking hands with 8500 sanitation workers (then still called “garbage men”) and thanking them for keeping the city clean. She documented her activities and conversations, including the workers’ stories, fears and humiliations associated with public perception of their job, in an attempt to challenge negative stereotypes. She believed that sanitation is not the same as garbage, and that “Sanitation creates order out of chaos, and in that way, it’s artlike.”

The second “artist” 😀 was a woman called Tressa “Grandma” Prisbey, who, at the age of 60, began transforming her  home in California into what is now called “The Bottle Village” Over the next 30 years she completed 15 structures in and around her home from bottles and found objects secured with mortar. She created a whimsical, slightly odd, and often beautiful home that many others have enjoyed over the years.

Finally, a man named Samuel Mockbee, who worked with his architectural students to create houses made from materials discarded by local companies in Georgia. They built beautiful, but inexpensive, homes for people in poverty from old bricks, carpet samples, and used tyres. His work has been called “an architecture of decency”.

Where does that leave me? I believe we are all creative – after all, we are made in the image of the Great Creator! And if that is so, then I can “create” everyday, whether it’s a painting, or a recipe, or a great way to make a bed…..

What can you create today? 😀

Each One Matters

… do I?

Monday night Hubby and I went to a fundraising dinner for Queensland chaplaincy – the above was the tagline for the evening. We were invited for a (free) dinner (donations were taken during the evening), with entertainment… we had a great time!
Throughout the evening we heard about the work chaplains do in schools, and heard from kids who had been helped through tough situations. I’m glad I got to hear, and have a greater understanding of the roles and difficulties – and rewards! of chaplaincy… if you want more information, go to –

It was a fun evening – good food, meeting new people… the entertainment for the evening was Marcia Hines… I tried to find a YouTube to post here, but they were all from old (70s) concerts, or badly taped. You probably had to be there 😀 I almost got up to dance….
Deep Blue 7 also played… here’s a clip from Australia’s Got Talent –

They also have a Young Blue programme, where they hold workshops for kids…I wish they’d been around when I was a kid learning violin 😀

One of the fun things… two of the people who were supposed to come couldn’t make it, and their food was organised anyway…. the friend who invited us, and my hubby, decided that it would be a shame to let it go to waste, so they went out onto the street (we were at South Bank Convention Centre) and invited a couple of blokes, on their way home from karate class, in for a free meal. They had a great evening… and a better meal than they were expecting 😀
Lots of fun, interesting conversations… and we got to nick abandoned chocolates off the tables on our way out (shh – don’t tell anyone!) What more could you ask for?

Navigating….

Here’s a word I’ve been using lately….

Navigate
–  sail or travel over (a stretch of water or terrain), esp. carefully or with difficulty
– guide (a vessel or vehicle) over a specified route or terrain
– make one’s way with difficulty over (a route or terrain)
ORIGIN late 16th cent. from Latin navigat- ‘sailed,’ from the verb navigare, from navis ‘ship’ + agere ‘drive.’

– sail across/over, sail, travel/journey/voyage across/over, cross, traverse, negotiate, pass.

It’s been on my mind a lot, especially while I’m praying…. I could stretch it to mean myself as a ship, sailing through my life…. I’ve just been using it to mean travelling, or negotiating…
Lately it feels almost like walking on a knife edge…. following the narrow path that God has laid out for me… being careful not stray into the things that may be good in themselves, but just not for me, right now. The word “navigate” has always conjured a picture for me of negotiating a path, with obstacles and dangers on either side. I know that I have a safe Guide 😀

The other part of my musing has been about other people’s journeys…. obviously, we are all given our own path, and the one we’re on may not make much sense to others. And we’re all on different stages of the journey anyway…
I have very deep beliefs about some things. I believe certain things to be true – immutable. Others may disagree. While that should not be a problem to me (if I truly believe something, I should not be threatened by someone else disagreeing 😀 )  I can still embrace others without losing myself… Being respectful of someone does not mean that I have to agree with them.

So, this afternoon, while musing, yet again, I remembered this bit from a book.. to me, it’s a great description of the Christian life. There’s a specific bit that brought up “navigation” to me (I’ll italicise it) but it’s all good (and pretty much sums up what I was trying to say above. But better…) In the book, it comes after a character has been accused of “ungodly liberalism” – this is her reply –

“There is nothing liberal about coming down the road that another human being is travelling, to meet them and bring them to safety. If that is liberal, then God is a liberal. There is nothing liberal about helping people to smash the false gods and images of religion or worldliness that have let them down and given them nothing over the years. If doing that is liberal, then God is a liberal. There is nothing liberal about using divine gifts of creativity and flexibility and ingenuity to open doors of understanding and delight in those who desperately need to know that compassion and care really are waiting for them in the arms of the Father. If that is liberal then the God who created this world is a liberal. There is nothing liberal about treading the narrowest path imaginable yourself, but throwing your arms as wide as they’ll go to greet and enfold as many others as possible. If that is liberal, then all the most godly men and women I’ve ever known are liberals. There is nothing liberal… about staying at the back of the expedition to tie shoelaces, and to encourage the fat ones and the slow ones and the ones whose feet hurt, rather than pushing triumphantly to the front of the line so that you can be the first to the ultimate destination. If doing that is liberal, then Jesus was the greatest liberal of them all.” – The Sacred Diary Of Adrian Plass Christian Speaker Aged 45 3/4 – Adrian Plass

The rest of the book is worth reading, as well…
Just my 2 cents… carry on…. 😀

Musing On Eternity

I have been musing on death, life and eternity lately… Yesterday I heard that someone who was a part of an online group I am also a part of had died. She was not someone I had personally interacted with… but was a much loved part of the group. And she seemed way too young….

I was thinking through the evening… I am at an age now where it’s not a preoccupation, but it is perhaps nearer than when I was younger. I don’t think I am afraid to die… I believe I know what comes next 🙂 I can still be a little apprehensive about the process of dying… I don’t want it to be drawn out, or painful… and I definitely don’t want it to be in the immediate future!

There’s a poem, by Emily Dickinson, that I loved from the first time I read it. I can see in it that moment between life and death….

Eternity, I’m Coming

A wife at daybreak I shall be,
Sunrise, thou hast a flag for me?
At midnight I am yet a maid –
How short it takes to make it bride!
Then, Midnight, I have passed from thee
Unto the East and Victory.

Midnight, “Good night”
I hear thee call.
The angels bustle in the hall,
Softly my Future climbs the stair,
I fumble at my childhood’s prayer –
So soon to be a child no more!
Eternity, I’m coming, sir –
Master, I’ve seen that face before.
