Mental Meanderings

I’ve had a gorgeous weekend! Busier than I’d thought it would be… caught up with friends… made new friends…
.. and laughed. I like laughing..

This morning, however, I’m feeling a bit off-colour.
Not sick…
Just … not well.

So I’ve been wandering round my brain, chilling with my sidekick, Internet, and wondering what I could come up with..

Not much, actually.

Nevertheless…

..have been checking out C.S.Lewis quotes on Pinterest.. here’s one

Source: humblepievintage.com via Tess on Pinterest………………………………………………………………………………………………………

I was talking to a friend yesterday morning about the dream of creating a Christian healing community, and to another friend yesterday evening about my plans/dreams to do a naturopathy course (which would eventually fit in with the community plans…) The way I feel today, it seems ridiculous. Out of reach. Undoable. I do feel a bit old and decrepit today…

The dream keeps growing, in my head. I am unable to do it on my own.

Fortunately, I am not on my own….

I still believe God has placed the dream in me… so He will send the resources and abilities to realise it. Don’t know when… but I suppose there’s no point worrying about it.
One foot in front of the other.. identify the next step, and take it.

😀

I love my life in God. It’s always an adventure… it’s always moving ahead..

Tomorrow I will feel better.
Tomorrow, I will take another step.

Today, I will rest. Drink tea.
… and finish with one of my favourite quotes..

What You See…

… is not necessarily what you get..

I don’t mean to be cryptic, and I’ll explain that remark a bit later..

Firstly, I went to Streetlinks this week with hubby and another friend of ours, where we provided music for some of the day. Streetlinks is an annual event for the homeless and disadvantaged, where various providers set up tables, and people can access, for free, the help they need. There’s free food (and free lattes – a rare luxury for me! 😀 ) and blankets/woollies, necessary for this time of year. We had a great day, and were able to contribute our music.

Just after our first set, we decided to go and check out the various tables, to see if we could access some help for our particular situation… we were asked by someone else why that would be necessary (we were helpers .. how could we be helpees ? ) We explained that we were, technically, homeless.

Did that  conjure up an image of us shivering  in blankets on a street corner, clutching an empty bottle of whisky?

If so, you would have a lot of company.. that’s the stereotype often served up on TV shows and movies (and of course, does exist out there) There are a lot more types of homelessness. Here’s a definition –

“An individual who lacks housing, including one whose primary residence during the night is a supervised public or private facility that provides temporary living accommodations; an individual who is a resident in transitional housing; or an individual who has as a primary residence a public or private place not designed for, or ordinarily used as, a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings.”

We fall into that definition… and so could the person next to you at the Woolworths checkout…. or the well dressed person at the library.. or the nice lady at church. We’re all just people, the same as any other, just in different circumstances… a point put across very well in this blog post. God does not have favourites… nor should we. God looks at the heart, not the outward appearance… so should we. That also harks back to my initial comment… what we see is not what is necessarily the whole truth. We turned up at our house (the one the bank has repossessed and is auctioning off) just in time to talk to the real estate agent who is auctioning it – he was just putting up boards. He is also handling twenty-two other mortgage repossession auctions at the moment… just one agent in one  small part of this country. How many more people out there are there who are just about to lose everything? Some of those may end up on the streets, some may couch surf for a while…. some may give up altogether. Not all of them are there because of stupid financial decisions – all it takes is the loss of a job, or an unexpected illness, or any number of reasons. Next week/next month/ next year it may be you, or someone you love. We’re all equal, in the end.

Ok, that ended up longer than I’d planned… I initially wanted to muse about two thoughts..
One is the whole “barrier between helper and those being helped” thing… it’s human nature to create groups and cliques, I think – we want to stick with what we know, and shun or disparage what we don’t. That makes it easy to see those who are disadvantaged in some way, and to start ascribing character traits to them (to be in that situation they must be lazy/stupid/greedy etc) It’s like a charm we can use to keep said misfortune from happening to us. We fool ourselves that we’re somehow “better” because we have jobs/homes/money in the bank… the truth is, often, we’re just more fortunate. Please don’t start shouting – I know you probably work hard and live frugally, and that’s great – you’re doing a good job, and I commend you… I suppose I’m just trying to say that your human worth is no more nor less than anyone else’s…
Here’s an interesting perspective (Warning – there’s profanity in this article, and the next… be aware, if that bothers you.. I think the points are still valid) This is specifically talking about the rich, but haven’t we all said or thought some of these things at some time or other? Simply put, none of us “make it” without help from others… and none of us “lose it” alone, either..

The second thought came out of a conversation this morning – that those in financial difficulties just need financial counselling to correct their poor habits…
This does make sense – learning ways to manage money is a good thing, and I’m glad that’s available… but not using money wisely encompasses a whole raft of other issues, some outlined in this article. We’ve all heard about the lottery winners who rip through the money in seconds, and we’ve all wished we could have that opportunity to show off our financial prowess 😀 Would we fare better? It’s a thought… We (hubby and I) are pretty good at living frugally… we’ve always done what we could to pay bills on time, put food on the table… all the essentials. For probably the last few years, it’s been tight… and the last couple of months it’s been a celebration if we could afford milk for tea in the morning, and some fresh fruit and veg (except the last couple of weeks – it’s like God’s emptied an orchard into our fridge, and stuck a couple of chooks in the freezer while He was at it. 😀 We have great friends and family) I’ve felt the whole “money-in-hand-gotta-spend-it-before-it-disappears” thing, and we’ve certainly seen both boys pretend they don’t want something because they know they can’t get it… that’s hard. We are greatly blessed, though – we have a hope and a future, and all of us know that. I don’t know how I’d cope without that.

I’ve ranted on a bit… congratulations if you’re still reading 😀 I’m not sure what great thought to finish up on… maybe think twice, look beyond appearance, walk in someone else’s shoes, we’re all the same under the skin – all the cliches.

That doesn’t make them less true.

Montelupo Arts

A few weekends back I was out with some friends. Among other places, we ended up here..
You know sometimes, when you go to a place, you can get a sudden “vibe” from it, even if you don’t know why? I walked into this place and felt… happy. Joyous. Even bouyant…
It’s filled with visions.. with inspirations…
Colourful plates and mugs and teapots, for the everyday…
..and beautiful mosaic women, of varying sizes, dotted throughout the store…

You can have a cup of coffee, go outside to sit on the huge wooden butterfly seat, and admire the pottery butterflies in the trees..

Check out the gallery as well 😀

It’s a part of Multicap , and seems to be a collaboration of established artists and artists with disabilities – each artist shares the responsibilities of production, and learns and hones their craft as well…

I walked around the shop with a huge smile on my face, and a little bubble of joy just waiting to escape.. 😀

…and it’s good to remember that, whatever our trials and challenges, beauty can result… and can bless others.

Shattered

The other day we went to the animal enclosure at Queen’s Park. We checked out the lizards and snakes, said hello to the wallabies, emus and dingoes, and chatted to the farm babies at the end of the circuit. It was fun (and littlest bean looked like he was in animal heaven…)

In the middle of the circuit there’s a mosaic sculpture, and a mosaic seat called the Numbellie Seat (The Everybody Seat)
The plaque on the end says it “depicts the story of the creation of the land of the Yuggera, Jagara and Ugurapul peoples, told by Aboriginal storyteller Shannon Ruska“. It seems to have been a collaborative effort between Artist, Storyteller, and various school kids…

I like the idea of mosaic… that you can take what was broken, shattered, only fit to be thrown out… and transform it into a thing of beauty – something that tells a story… heals a heart… speaks peace.
In my life there have been times when I felt shattered and broken… like rubbish, shunned and only fit to be thrown away…
I know that was not the truth of who I was – but it was how I felt…
Many years ago, God gave me a verse that told me what He saw, and comforted me in a broken place…

“O afflicted city, lashed by storms and not comforted,
I will build you with stones of turquoise,
your foundations with sapphires.
I will make your battlements of rubies,
your gates of sparkling jewels,
and all your walls of precious stones.” – Isaiah 54:11-12

It helped me to see that I did not have to stay where I was – that He would rebuild me, stronger and better than before…

Even the “underside” parts of life can be incorporated to sparkle and let the sun shine through!

Is my life peaceful and easy now? … Well, not so as you’d notice 😀
… but my healed cracks and fractures tell the story of my Creator-

“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.”
“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” – 2 Corinthians 4:7-10, 16-18

… whether I stand in sunshine or in storm, I still stand firm in Him 😀

To His Door

The path to your door
Is the path within:
Is made by animals,
Is lined by flowers,
Is lined by thorns,
Is stained with wine,
Is lit by the lamp of sorrowful dreams:
Is washed with joy,
Is swept by grief,
Is blessed by the lonely traffic of art:
Is known by heart,
Is known by prayer,
Is lost and found,
Is always strange,
The path to your door.

Talking With God

Today was one of those bleah-what-shall-we-do-for-school type of days… I don’t want the boys to get too much into the workbooks-as-drudgery thinking (although it’s sort of hard not to…)
Thankfully, our combined Bible readings this morning led us into thinking and talking about how God talks to us, and the importance of listening and letting Him guide us….
…. and there was our curriculum for the day!!

I wrote down five aspects of life – Personal, Spiritual, Social, Work, and Giving Out (Mission). I then had the boys take time to pray specifically through each one, and write down anything that came to them…. at this point, there was no “wrong” – it was mostly an exercise in hearing, and I didn’t want them talking themselves out of something that God was saying, but that didn’t seem “normal”, or “comfortable” 😀

After this part, they could then pray through again, and check….

… and then they were to draw it all up into a sort of mind map, with lots of colour and illustration  (note to self – little beans’ notion of “lots” vastly differs from mine….) They spent the morning on it, and took it seriously… results were very interesting!
I love it when God steps in to everyday life! 😀

Compassion

Today is Compassion Sunday, when we can focus on the work Compassion does to alleviate poverty and broaden the lives of children in many different countries…

We sponsor two little boys – Hassan in Kenya, and Colen in the Philippines. They are the same ages as our two boys, so that’s a point of identification for them 😀
Sponsoring means giving money each month, and also being able to write to the children, and receive updates on how they are going and letters from them as well… it’s well worth it 😀
Have a look – it’s easy to start changing a child’s life! (Could be a great gift for Mother’s Day 😀 )
